Need advise on upgrade of system board (T40)

#1 Post by nabwong » Sat Oct 15, 2005 9:31 am

Hi everyone,

Didn't know such a forum existed. Glad it does. Here's my story.

So, i was surfing the web the other day and suddenly, my T40 froze. When i restarted it, using the power button, the lcd refused to turn on. It wouldn't even go to the bios. So i checked it the hard disk was dead on another machine, but it was fine. This lead me to think that it was either the system board or Cpu.

So i suspected it was the system board (never concluded, might still be cpu) and then purchased this,

SYSTEMBOARD WITH ATI 128MB FIRE GL2 AND GIGABIT ETHERNET WITH SECURITY CHIP, DETAILS AS BELOW:

IBM FRU: 93P3313, 93P4159 (27R2031, LATEST SUB NUMBER)

It's a good upgrade as i wanted to upgrade the video card from the existing 32mb. I'm going to use the same CPU, which is a 1.5 pentium M.

I'm probably gonna do the installation myself (first time). Gonna get arctic silver and cleaning solution.

Questions
1. do i need a better fan?
2. is my cpu compatible?
3. any things i've missed out?
4. do i need bios update?

I've fixed up a desktop before but not a laptop, so help is greatly apprciated. Oh, and i'm in cambridge, MA. Anyone in the area who could give me a hand? The mobo arrives in 2 weeks. :D

Thanks guys,
Nab

1. Yes, you need to replace heatsink because now you need to also cover the video card core:
Fan assembly Long M10 (FRU 13R2657)

2. Yes, you can go up to the 2.1 ghz pentium M model

3. Not really, this motherboard will fit 100% on any T40-T41-T42 14.1 LCD model chassis

4. Yes, you should update to bios version 3.18 and embedded controller version 3.04. First the embedded controller, then the Bios

ThinkPad T4x series are easy to work with. Not that much screws to remove and its easy to remove all components and re-assemble them.

Any more questions, feel free to ask.

go for the 93p4159 motherboard series than the 93p3313 series,

you will have option to control your battery charging there by extending battery life.
or even better get a t42 series motherboard with finger print capabilty if you want to add that in future

is there any difference between 14,1" LCD and 15" LCD T Series motherboards

Will the motherboard of an IBM T43p fitt an IBM T40/T41 case ?
