T22 beeps when I type fast... :(

#1 Post by cepler » Sun Oct 16, 2005 9:59 pm

Do newwer Thinkpads have this problem? Whenever I type rather fast (80-90wpm) I get a keyboard beep. This happened on a T21 and my current T22. I'm curious if anyone has run into this on the T42 or T43 series... It's a bit annoying and I haven't had this happen on other laptops, just these T-series Thinkpads...

You can try the solution made by Roy_W
Roy_W wrote:The sound can be disabled quite easily

* Right-click My Computer and select Manage.
* Expand System Tools and select Device Manager.
* From the View menu, select Show hidden devices.
* Expand Non-Plug and Play Drivers.
* Right-click Beep, and select Properties.
* Select the Drivers tab.
* Click Stop. You can also change the start-up type to Disabled so the beep service never starts.

That disables ALL system beeps? That might be a workaround but thats not what I'd like to do if possible, just curious if others have experienced this problem as well and especially if they experience it on the T43 and X41 tablet series as those are 2 machines I may end upgrading to...

Oh and the other interesting thing is the beeping occurs with specific key combinations that seem to be along the left half of the keyboard (Can't recall exactly which they were). Anyone else run into this?

This is a problem common to all thinkpad keyboards, and is an old issue affecting a lot (but not all) of old AT and PS/2 interface keyboards. Certain key combinations, (esepcially O-U-N for me) will beep if all happen to be depressed at once, which can happen often if you're typing above the 80wpm range.

The workaround posted (also possible from the command prompt by typing "net stop beep" does disable all system beeps, and I don't use it myself, but honestly I haven't heard any other system beeps emenate from my T42p lately. Normally I work with the volume muted, so it hasn't bugged me too much for a while.

AFAIK, no real "fix" for this on the ultranav keyboard.
