Which graphic card? X300, FireGL? Confused!

#1 Post by jlingo » Mon Oct 17, 2005 3:00 am

I'm a graphic designer using a lot of CorelDraw, PhotoShop, and 3dMax Studio software to work.
A friend of mine recommended ATI X300, but others FireGL.
Someone told me ATI X300 is strictly for gaming, doesn't improve any performance for Coreldraw, Photoshop, nor 3DMax Studio.
But others said FireGL is workstation graphic cards, not suitable for gaming and the performance is really bad for gaming!
Are these true? I got confused and don't really know which card to get? I'm occasional gamer but working full time as a graphic designer.
What are the essential difference between X300 and FireGL?

Thanks for any advice.

First of all, it depends on which FireGL we are talking about, as the latest one in Thinkpads is equivalent to an X600 I believe, while the FireGL T2 is the 9600 (or X300) equivalent. Now, as for the FireGL vs Normal discussion:

FireGL cards are NOTHING MORE than normal Ati cards with enhanced OpenGL drivers, certified for several software titles, and usually more memory. They are also clocked a little bit slower than their normal counterparts, so that they are more stable in production environment. These two things mean that a FireGL card should easily outperform a "normal" card in an openGL application (autocad, 3dsmax, even opengl games) while it should be a little slower in anything else, due to the reduced clock speed. Coreldraw and Photoshop are largely dependant on things other than the graphics card memory/clock, so you shouldn't see a difference between the 2 cards here, as they are essentially the same chipset. Basically, it all comes down to this: If you use 3dsMAX with large textures a lot go for the FireGL, if not save some cash and get the X300 instead.
