#1 Post by Thinkpadgranddad » Mon Oct 17, 2005 5:24 pm

I only email,watch dvd's,play cd's,burn cd's,IM's,some word processing.

Do I get a T30 1.8GHz or T30 2.0GHz or R40 1.3GHz or 1.8GHz

The T30 2.0GHz machine is a fine machine (I had one) and better than the R models I have personally seen. Make sure any used T30 has had the motherboard replaced to correct the memory slot problem. ... JD Hurst

Can you recommend a place where I can buy.A reliable T30;that is 2.0GHz

I only keep finding the 1.8GHz & 1.5GHz

My budget is from:$600-$725.00

GD, check the certified used notebooks on IBM's web site, I saw a few nice t30's, I think one was $705 wireless upgradable. Lot of T series there tonight. I can vouch for them because i bought one, specs below. :)

I just doubled checked
I found only 1.6GHz & 1.8GHz
And two 2.0GHz but they were pricey.
at www.cfousa1.com
I need the 2.0GHz model;don't I?Maybe,I'll have to get a T23 and upgrade everything.Seems the T30 won't be in my budget!

I know JD talks a lot about that 2G processor, I have the 1.8P4, mine seems almost as fast as my t42. Get one and play with it for a few days, they give you the warranty if you have a problem sure that they would take it back for another.

You think that any of the T23's are worth messing with?
Do you know anything about www.usanotebook.com ?

Mike - I refer to the 2GHz machine because I had one. I would expect the 1.8GHz to perform as well if the amount of RAM is the same in the two comparable machines. Cheers, ... JD Hurst

JD, after I read my post, I kind of thought maybe it was poorly worded. Really the intention was to keep the t30 alive as a possible candidate. You have been a supporter of the t30 throughout some other threads as well, I wish I had the 2gig processor. I was trying to make a case for the 1.8 as there appears to be more of those in the Certified used section of IBM's web. I have relegated my t42 to leaning up against the end table near my easy chair, I like the t30 better at 1/3 the price, think that goes to show the price isn't really all that should be taken into account. Price is not directly proportional to satisfaction.

I have no experience with the t23.

If I were in the market for a T30, I wouldn't hesitate to get a 1.8GHz machine if it were clean, in good condition and had the memory slot fix. Further, if I were in the market for a T30, and the price was right, I would also invest in a 7200-rpm hard drive. Makes the T30 a reasonable keeper. Thanks for your comments. ... JD Hurst

I got a small fleet of T30 2GHz machines for myself and a client in 2003. They were afflicted with one of the memory slots failing leaving only one chipset intact. It is a warranty problem and repaired by first replacing the motherboard and second by insulating things so that the slot cannot short out. That is roughly (albeit not precisely) what the memory slot issue is about. ... JD Hurst

Well,so far I've found about two T30's that were 1.6GHz
I think that www.eritech.com has a few 2.0GHz
