Any idea why my T41 would go considerably slower on network?

#1 Post by aphex » Mon Oct 17, 2005 7:15 pm

I currently have two systems in my house (both 802.11g);

Mac Mini w/ built in wifi
IBM T41 w/ Intel 2200bg

Today i upgraded my roadrunner from 5 up / 384k down to 10 up / 1 down

On the Mini, running a speedtest, it varies, but i usually get between 7000-8500

On my T41, i cant get over 3000, usually closer to 2000.

Any ideas?

Dosent matter where I am in the house, no improvement. All recent drivers installed.

There are a some tweaks you can apply to the TCP\IP settings to improve speed over a broadband connection - MTU size, etc. The Mac may already be tweaked.

Update:

Well its a few months later and its still been having the problem...

Went out and bought a Belkin 802.11g PCMCIA card, and BAM, 10x faster (speedtests show ~9mbps)

What the heck is wrong with the 2200bg? Tried new drivers, nothing works.

Do you have both systems locked into "g-only" mode?

Cheers,

Didn't know i could lock each system into G-Only, thought that was a router option only...

However, i do need B on occation when i travel to my parents.

Some work on understanding the settings on your wireless devices, and how to change those settings when you need to, could be time well spent!

Tweaking the network connection particulars is a lot of work, at least in windows. I had done a lot of reading on his and had optimised my windows to give the fastest connection for me at home, but then it got awefull slower in my office. You'll realize why when you read more on how the whole thing works.

Anyway, since then i try not to mess with the settings all that much. I mean manually modifying the MTU, Packet Size etc.. getting to your problem:

1. Let us first assume that its not a hardware issue. Windows stores the particulars in its registry. I can't remember how, but you can flush out all the information manually and restore to windows defaults. You can use software like TweakMaster etc for doing this also. It has an option to restore setings to windows defaults.

2. Just as an experiment, disable all firewalls that are associated with your built in wireless connections, confirm correct proxy settings etc...

3. If you have restored your network settings to windows default and confirmed other associated settings as mentioned above, then I would suggest spending $15 or so and getting a new mini-pci wireless card and trying it out. I am asuming the antenna cables are all right because you did not mention you have any reception issues.

Personally, I am inclined towards it being a software issue, the biggest software bug being windows ;)

But wouldn't those same software "bottlenecks" come into play when using a PCMCIA card in the same laptop? For some reason, the Belkin PCMCIA 802.11g card is as fast (if not faster) than my mac mini desktop.

Its only the 2200bg that incredibly slow.

Some settings are global in nature. Other ones are local to the device or even the user.
