How to find which brand of RAM module installed?

#1 Post by firefly » Tue Oct 18, 2005 11:48 am

I just received my T43 (2668-HH5) with 512MB stock and I would like to upgrade to 1GB. I'm trying to stick with at least the same brand of module but having problem with identifying the one already installed.

I tried to do a parts lookup and the RAM FRU says 00000. Then I tried to installed CPU-z and all the RAM info field are blank. Is there any other ways to find out without taking it apart?

I got different info about my ram from IBm website and Access IBM on my machine. So, I called IBM customer service. They couldn't tell what was preinstalled in my machine. They told me to remove keyboad to check the memory physically.

If CPUID can't identify your memory, I think u may have to remove the keyboard. It's quite easy. You can find instructions and even a movie over IBM web.

why is it necessary to get exactly the same brand of memory? I've ordered IBM 'brand' memory and received Crucial, Hynix, Elpida, and several other brands. all have worked perfectly (tested all with Memtest86).

brand really does not matter. just match the specs and buy from a reliable manufacturer (Crucial, OCZ, Mushkin, Corsair, etc.) and you'll be fine.

DDR2 must be matched in terms of both speed and size in order to run at dual channel, but it doesn't have to be made by the same manufacturer.

correct, brand means nothing.

My A31 had 2x256MB from the factory... different brands.

As long as the specs are the same, it's irrelevent.

Just remove the keyboard (4 screws) and behold the IBM 512 MB SODIMM, might be Elpida, Samsung, Hynix, ProMOS, etc

Isn't it necessary to have two identical module to run dual channel? Or it's total BS and there won't be any noticeable difference?

The modules have to be identical in terms of hardware and not brand name.
Current: 1. T400 - 14" WXGA+ LED - T9400 - 4GB DDR3 - 320GB HDD - Mobility Radeon 3470
2. T42 - 14" XGA - P-M 745 - 1.5 GB - 60GB HDD - Radeon 9000 - biometrics
Previous: ThinkPad T43, X32, X61, R50e
