Desperate - Windows won't start in my Thinkpad 600E

I have a Thinkpad 600E that I bought used. I am running Windows XP. It's always been slow, but recently the AC adaptor started working only intermittently causing my battery to run down. So I bought another one that listed the 600 series on the compatibility list. It worked initially and then on start up the 3rd or 4th. time, it froze. I re-booted and then it went into a lengthy diagnostic and examined what seemed like a million files, corrected at least that many. Now it is stuck at the Windows start up screen with the msg. - " We apologize, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. .....Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice (Safe mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last Known Good Configuration - your most recent settings that worked)" No matter what choice I make, it beeps and comes back to that screen. Never starting up. Could this damage have been done by the new adaptor? Am I totally screwed? Any suggestions to get it to stop cycling back to this screen and start Windows in any way? Then, maybe I could run a scan to fix any problems that I am experiencing. Any help will be greatly appreciated. .

Try removing the battery from the 600E, and reboot.

If this works, then make sure that you have downloaded the power management/battery maximizer utility from IBM's website.
