Question about my T23

I would like to upgrade to internal wireless. I am hoping it would give me a little but more battery power. So here's the salient info:

1.2GHz PIII-M
14.1" 1024x768
TYPE 2647-4RU
S/N 78-BRTXK 10/02

I do have a mini pci card installed already, but me thinks it's the modem. Also another question. If I do the upgrade, does with wifi card also have a modem chip on it or do I lose dial-up connectivity option as a result of swapping mini pci cards?

Off topic: I recently installed bootvis and tunexp. IT has really made a difference for the better in terms of performance. i would recommend those 2 programs to anyone looking to pep up their system on the cheap.

I don't know if your laptop has the wireless antenna built-in. If not, you will have to replace the LCD with an LCD with the built-in antenna. It will probably void your warranty as well.

I don't think the built-in wireless will give you much more battery life. To get more battery life, you can get a T30 battery to use in your T23. It will give you over 20% more battery life (4400mAH vs 3600mAH).

Looking at the two parts lists below, I see that you have the modem only card. Whether the antenna is already installed, I cannot say. Perhaps another T23 owner would know. You could always open it up and look. Here is the link for the Hardware Maintenance Manual, in case you want to tinker.

Displays with factory installed wireless antennae have a ribbed insert on the sides of the display cover near the top. (with the display open)
If your display is smooth on the sides you do not have factory installed 802.11b antennae.

I am running a T30 battery now. As well as an ultrbay 2000 battery. I get on average 3 hours of run-time. With CPU at 600MHz, and the display turned down. I get about 30 - 40 more minutes if I remove my Wifi card. I was just hoping for more. On my Powerbook 500MHz G3 with dual batteries I can 8+ hours using the wireless card with no problems at all. I figured since they are both LION batteries though, I might get near the same amount of time. Especially using a chip deisgned by Intel to made for mobile applications.

Don't get me wrong though, I am not complaining. I love my T23. It runs fast and cool. The fan rarely comes on and when it does it goes off after about a minute or so, and really isn't that loud.

As far as the LCD Antenna things goes. Does anyone have pics of what the LCD would look like if had them built in? I have some sort of rubberized dude right in the center of the topmost edge of the LCD cover (I hope the made sense).

That rubberized dude on the top is the "Ultraport". You can buy a low res web cam to mount there.
Feel the out sides of the display, if it is all smooth you have no antenna. If you feel ribs towards the upper part of the display you have antenna.

Ok that feeling out the sides did it. I do not have internal wireless. I would rather save my cash for a better machine to run Vista on when it comes out.

Here's antoher question.

I have a 1.2GHz P3. Any chance of upgrading the CPU to something a little more powerful? It seems reasonably fast and XP works great, but if I find out later I could have gotten a faster CPU, I would kick myself.

A faster HDD will make a much bigger difference. One of the 7200 RPM drives with 8 or MB of cache will speed up your system. 512MB of memory will also help a little with XP.

but the first link does have a large size picture.I have tried many time myself after you told me that you didn't see any picture in there.maybe you just refresh many times,you can see it.

I think you do have a chance to upgrade your TP more powerful.
you can think about RAM to 1GB,100GB 7200RPM HDD.these will bring you some more performance.specially,1GB RAM does give you some benefits on XP.

I already have 768MB of Ram. I have a Toshiba 5400RPM drive w/16MB of cache. It's a pretty fast drive.

All I want to know is if I can upgrade the CPU or not.

If not...

I like the formfactor of the T23. It's slim and light. The ultrabay is really cool. So what newer models exist that have roughly the same formfactor (although a touchpad would be nice) as my current T23?

I am hoping for something around 1.4 - 1.7GHz with 1 -2 GB RAM. I would like to be able to run Vista on it using the new Aero UI. I can probably run vista on my T23 but I would have to turn off a lot of the eye candy.

1.2 GHz CPU is the fastest any T23 will take.

Regarding your battery life, there is something wrong with it. You should definitely get more than 3 hours with a T30 battery and an Ultrabay Battery at 600 MHz. Click on the battery icon, and monitor your average power consumption. Also check on your battery capacities. I am getting more than 2 hours on a T23 with a T23 battery and Adaptive power scheme.

If you are worried about Windows Vista, the best advice I can give you is to not get any computer right now. There are even doubts the current generation T43p computers will be able to run Vista with all the eye candy (graphics card requirements).

Your T23 is a great computer, by the way. With your current configuration you should run any current software (excluding graphics intensive stuff) satisfactorily. Just look into that power consumption issue.

Are you running IBM's BattMizer? With a click, you can change the CPU and LCD power settings, from "Max CPU" speed to "I want to watch the entire War & Peace saga on DVD" (kidding).

click on "1xu105u1.exe", when the popup box opens, uncheck the IBM Download Mgr box at the bottom, and save the file to your HD. Do the same for the text file(just right-click and "Save As:"

After it;s downloaded, click on the file and it'll install. Find the folder and click on the Setup(yeah, quite a few steps) file. If I remember, you'll have to reboot.

Once it's running, you'll have the battery icon on the Task Bar. A single click on the battery icon will bring up the Power Schemes. The best thing about this is, with the "Battery Information" you will be able to watch your battery's health over time and check it's deterioration.
