T42p - 2373Q1U Screen Problem with picture, advice?

#1 Post by Ojisan » Wed Oct 19, 2005 11:46 pm

Hi all,

My 1.5 month old T42p 2373Q1U had been working flawlessly until this afternoon... Nothing new in terms of environment. never been dropped.

Now my LCD screen looks like this...

I tap on the palm rest and the screen reacts, occasionally going blank. Is this a sign of bad video card? The problem is intermittent. Anyone have similar experience? Is it going to die eventually? If you had it repaired, how long did it take you?

I'm tempted to take it apart and check for loose connection, but it looks like video memory issue too...

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks,
Ojisan

Try hooking up an external monitor. If you see the same picture, then it points to the video circuitry. If not, then I'd say it's either your panel or cables.

Thanks for the quick reply! External monitor shows the same thing.

Also, I notice it's particular sensitive to a light tap (I mean typing light tap) just right of the touch pad (HDD connector area). Not sure if sensitive HDD protection has anything to do with it? I thought the video card was located on the far left top area near the USB port...

Thanks

Have you contacted IBM/Lenovo customer support? I'm curious how they will treat this.

I've owned, 3 older IBM Thinkpads and had nothing but great support.

Bad connection of the video chip to the motherboard, they replaced my MB for exact same problem as yours twice ( once on a brand new machine right out of the box ). I doubt you will find anything visibily lose inside which can be tightened. Call up for support, goodluck

Thanks y'all for the advice. I called the tech support. He gave me a case number and told me he'll call back tomorrow... don't know why. I was hoping to send it and get it repaired asap. Oh well...

Ok. I must have mis-heard him. His english wasn't clear, even though the system said I was connecting to a call center in Atlanta.

In any case, I'm happy so far. IBM sent me a prepaid return box. All I had to do was packup and call DHL for pickup.

As many has already mentioned on this board, great service so far. I'll wait and see what I get back :)

Just a follow up for anyone interested.

I have to say that I am very happy with their service. I shipped my T42p Friday and got it back Monday with a good working video card.

I'm guessing they changed the motherboard. However, it had a bad Ethernet port this time. Called IBM again, and out the door again today. Support said they'll send it to 2nd level technician to make sure things are done right... ok.

Another follow up...

Their service is fantastic! This time, the machine came back in 3 work days (+ weekend) with technician signed repair sheet. Works like new again.

One happy customer here :D
