T43 RAM

#1 Post by jsklar » Thu Oct 20, 2005 2:30 pm

if i were to add some ram to my thinkpad, is there any huge advantage to buying lenovo's branded mem?

what other brands are good on the quality/price ratio?

how much should i be paying for about 1gb of pc4200? through my school i can get a discount on a gig stick of lenovo's brand - but $260 still seems a little steep...

any ideas?

Yes, that is steep.

You can't go wrong with Crucial, only $115 + $4 shipping at newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145097

or from Bill for $139:

Lenovo doesnt manufacture memory. Most likely the ram modules will be Samsung, Elpida, Micron, Hynix, etc

You can buy that memory from newegg, good quality :!:

I second the buy from Newegg idea. I took out the preinstalled 256mb module and replaced it with 512mb and then installed another 512mb in the other Dimm slot. Both are Kingston value but there are other brands you can get retail and much cheaper outside of Lenovo.

I think it was at newegg, but the sale ended last week. Anyways, if you want a good quality memory stick for a low price, get Kingston at Newegg for $77.99 +$4.81 shipping (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820144183).

Or, if you care about every single penny, you can give a shot with the G.Skill brand at Newegg for $62.50 + $4.81 shipping (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231042).

Personally, I would rather go with a trusted brand and quality like Kingston.

I live in Canada and recently bought a brand new OCZ 1GB DDR2 PC-4200 memory for roughly US$65 (before duties, exchange rate, taxes, custom fee) from a computer shop for my T43 2687-D8U. I now have 1gb+512mb of ram resulting in a smoother computer performance.

The premium on Lenovo RAM just ain't justifiable. You should be paying under $100 for a decent 1gb ram.

get the most you can get..
major brands only..
ibm/lenovo do NOT make their own memory..

crucial is ok..
my current price for 1gig parts is $115..
or $109 with a new thinkpad..

currently out of stock from the holidays..

kingston is, or was, good..

I picked up a stick of 1GB Kingston ram and put it in my T43 (which I am typing on now) and it works great. It was KVR533D2S4/1G.

As long as its 200pin PC4200 DDR2 SODIMM, it doesn't necessarily have to be from Lenovo. The 1GB cost me $110 CDN, which is $95 US, much better than whatever Lenovo wanted.

Hey Hanson, you must be the same hanson on redflagdeals. Cheers to the 2687-D8U.

I personally prefer crucial. They only use their parent company (Micron) for chips. Micron sells to IBM, HP, Apple among others... so you know the quality is pretty good.

I got some on NewEgg for about $105 IIRC. Not bad for a 1GB stick.

I'm considering Kingston so your wording raised a flag with me. Isn't it good anymore?

I have Kingston all over my digital pig sty, and have had no problems.

I often use www.pricescan.com to find good prices on memory, or other items. YMMV. Happy Hunting!
