X40 Bluethooth

#1 Post by boy188 » Fri Oct 21, 2005 9:57 am

I have a X40 that dosen't have the bluetooth modem. Is it possible to replace the modem with a bluetooth one. It's a Model 2386. An intel pro wireless board occupies the mpci slot.
Thanks.

Yes, it's possible.

Bluetooth DC

#3 Post by boy188 » Thu Oct 27, 2005 8:41 am

I purchased a 91P7319 daughter card off of ebay and installed it. The computer detected the card, installed the Microsoft bluetooth enumerator and IBM Bluetooth III drivers. Fn+F5 turns the bluetooth on and the Bluetooth light turns on.

However, I cannot get the computer to detect bluetooth devices or be found by other devices. It searches but finds nothing. Is this a problem with the daughter card? Has anyone else run into this?

Thanks.

if you connect ("pair") two Bluetooth devices for the first time, you will have to make one of them visible. Most Bluetooth devices are set to hide their presence to other devices by default. So this could maybe be the problem.

Bluetooth antenna

#6 Post by boy188 » Thu Oct 27, 2005 12:50 pm

I didnt buy an additional antenna because it was my understanding that it was built in. When i connected the daughter board--there was a cable that plugged into the right side, and the left side attached to the system board. These are the same connections that the installation video shows. There are no additional connections on the daughter board indicating that there should be another antenna.

The bluetooth light on the display pannel lights up when I press Fn + F5 and all drivers are installed, etc.

I removed the cover and placed the phone closer to the daughter card and it found it. I guess my question now is, there cable that i plugged into the daughter card was there previously and was plugged into the modem. I guess i need to add a bluetooth antenna which would plug into the same slot. What does the cable that is there now do? Should it be removed and then the bluetooth antenna added in its place?

Thanks--this is confusing.

if you had the Bluetooth Antenna you should have one white cable near the Modem card for it. It should have a connector like in the link:
http://www.hirose-connectors.com/products/W.FL_5.htm

i don't know if it's exctly the type of connector which should be used there, but you should get the image.

But as you say, if you move the phone closer to the TP and get connection, this indicates that your X40 hasn't got the Antenna built-in. And if I'm right you should have 3 connections to the card: System (USB?), Antenna, Modem connector. I think you should take another look into the HMM.

You are correct, the connector is tiny. So now its time to order the antenna and install it--so much fun. Thanks for your help!

i wouldn't call it fun to open the LCD bezel. I haven't had this problem myself, but i thought that the antenna is no CRU (Customer Replaceable Unit) ie. you are voiding your warranty if you open the LCD Bezel.

someone correct me if i'm wrong.

You are correct--it's not under warranty though.

is the antenna absolutely necessary? i'm not looking for a vast distance. probably just 3 feet is fine by me. $14 is a lot for a wire.

I did some research on this before I bought my X40 (which I later bought with bluetooth). There was another post, on this forum, where the author stuck the attenae around the keyboard area. Not sure where, but it avoids having to open up the LCD.

Yes, you have to have an antenna. I put one under the keyboard once about 6 months ago using the advice of another member here who was nice enough to call my answering machine and leave detailed instructions while I was away on a trip. I don't remember WHO it was but I sure appreciated it [THANKS by the why... if you're reading this!]. It isn't that hard so I won't call you!!! Buy the antenna, open a beer or two, and have fun playing. It would be hard to do any damage trying the under-the-keyboard method.

Im going to try putting mine under the keyboard. If i hold a bluetooth device extremly close to the bt modem it will detect the device so Im sure the antenna would work well under the keyboard. Im not looking for the full range. I'll let everyone know how it works out once I install it.

There's plenty of room under the keyboard for the antenna. Just make absolutely sure that you insulate
it well from everything. I stuck it inside some heat-shrink tubing that I secured in place with a few small
tie wraps. (Don't shrink the tubing or you'll distort and possible short the antenna.)

While you're in there, you might as well drop in a spare Trackpoint cap. Cheap insurance.
