Recovery CD won't boot on non-IBM drive
Recovery CD won't boot on non-IBM drive
The HD on my X41 was partitioned, formated (don't ask me why, it's done) and I would like to reinstall WinXP Pro that comes with the computer on the 7 disc Recovery CD.
I have 2 external USB drives that were both recongnized by the BIOS when boot. However, I keep getting this error:
============SCREEN============
Now preparing to start your new computer...
ATAPI IDE CD-ROM driver version V 1.45a(11/03/1997)
Copyright (C) MITSUMI ELECTRONIC CO.,LTD. 1994,1995,1996
ERROR: Unable to detect ATAPI IDE CD-ROM drive
ATAPI IDE CD-ROM device driver not loaded.
Microsoft RANDrive version 3.06 virtual disk C:
Disk size: 4,096k
Sector size: 512 bytes
Allocation unit: 4 sectors
Directory enteries: 208
A:\>
Device driver not found: 'IBMCD001'.
No valid CDROM device drivers seleted
Number of drivers 0 Starting drive A
None of the drives contains a recovery CD.
=============================
During this time, I can hear the drives operating/reading.
Next, I tried booting a generic WinXP and it was flawless.
My question is... is there another way to boot the recovery CD? Can I make my own boot CD with contents on the Recovery CD?
... or there is no way around and I have to buy a IBM brand drive?
Thanks in advance

Plug in your USB drive. Start or Restart your computer. When your system is begining to restart follow the screen direction on the bottom to press the Function key for the Temporary Boot Menu (I'm having a brain fart right now but it's either F11 or F12). When that menu comes up choose your USB drive from the list. All will work fine now.
The mesage you are getting is for an INTERNAL drive (thus the IDE message) and not a USB device. You are either choosing the wrong boot drive manually or your BIOS is set up to look for a boot from an IDE CD device. This message has nothing to do with your USB drive not being an IBM manufactuered product.
Try this and post again your success or if you still have problems. If problems, post an e-mail address and we can correspond that way or by phone to get you working. I don't see this being an issue that can't be easily worked around.

THANKS... as I said, "brain fart", but I knew it was one of the two!Deckard wrote:brainpicker, it's F12
Anyway...
Two things to try:
1) Is it at all possible that you mis-labled the cd's? You must put in the Rescue & Recovery CD 1st and not the 1st of the 6 Restore CD's. Try all your created CD's to be sure.
2) If you have a USB floppy you can boot using a windows 98 emergency disc (if you don't have one laying around you can download one off the internet). Then try directing the A: prompt to your USB CD-ROM which will be E: if your hard drive is formatted as a single drive partition C: (the RAM drive created pushes your other drives back one position so D: becomes E:, etc.). That should work unless your Rescue and Recoery CD is bad. If that is the case you can create another one off a working R&R compatible laptop or someone can send you one.
Try these and post again. I'm going out for the afternoon but I will look in when I return.

brainpicker:
Thanks for the advice.
1) The CD label seems to be correct. CD1 (total 7) is the only CD that has a file called boot.catalog
2) Tried and unfortunately it didn't work. I couldn't even get a Device Found. I guess my external CD drive just isn't compatible after all.
But the weird thing is I was able to boot a generic Win XP CD.
Thanks again.

That means that the CD only has drivers for the IBM drives. It boots in a sort of floppy emulation mode, and then tries switching to CD mode. Emphasis on the word tries.

OK. Instead of responding with the brands and models just save some time and do this:
1- Copy the dos driver file from your usb cd-rom's driver cd, diskette, or from their support website (it will be a .sys file) to your Windows 98 Boot Disk you said you have.
2- Startup with this Windows 98 Boot Disk
3- At the A:\ type edit config.sys
4- Under [CD] add one more line at the end device=***.sys /D:usbcd001 (where *** is the name of the driver you copied in step 1)
5- Save your work
6- Open autoexec.bat
7- Modify the MSCDEX line (LH %ramd%:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:mscd001 /L:%CDROM%) and at the end of it add this: /D:usbcd001
8- Save your work
9- Reboot
Now you should be able to use your brand of USB CD-ROM

What are the brands and models of the two cd drives that won't work?
Yak
A desktop model with an external USB case.
2. M a t s u s h i t a CR-175 CD-ROM
Slim model with an external USB case.
Both were picked up by the X41 BIOS and can boot Windows XP generic CD. Just not the IBM Recovery CD.
Thanks!

Problem solved! ... sort of...
Okay, I still wasn't able to boot the factory Recovery CD but I managed to installed the content via an external USB HD.
I think the problem was the Recovery CD has ATAPI driver built in but BIOS wasn't able to boot because once the CD drive is connected through an USB port, it's not standard ATAPI anymore.
Anyway, this is how I did it and I hope it can help anyone who is having the same problem.
1. Have an USB floppy drive and a Win98 boot disk ready. If you don't own one, format your USB HD so that it can boot Win98 boot disk.
2. Copy all the contents on CD#1 to the USB HD.
3. On the first Recovery CD, under the folder RECOVERY, there is a file named GME46US.IMD which I believe it's a image file.
4. On rest of the Recovery CDs (Mine came with 7), there should be a similar image file with the same file name but with different extension. For example, GME46US.002 on CD2, GME46US.003 on CD3...etc. COPY all of them to the same RECOVERY folder as GME46US.IMD
5. Boot your TP with Win98 floppy.
6. Change directory to the root of your USB HD. (Mine was C:\)
7. Start recovery by executing RECOVER.BAT
...and the rest is all automatic.
Just wanna say "THANK YOU" to all of those who tried to help, especially brainpicker!
