Need Japanese recovery discs T30

#1 Post by MadeInJapan » Fri Oct 21, 2005 1:06 pm

I called IBM today trying to buy their T30 recovery discs for WinXP Pro (part number 62P8918) for a Japanese student who has bought a T30 with English windows installed, but IBM refused to sell it to me as the serial number of the machine in question is not a "Japanese" model. Does anyone know a solutino to this? Does anyone have one, or a T30 with a Japanese serial number I can "borrow" for this process? Greatly appreciated.

Hi,

If it is still installed you can do this

http://www.4saad.com/WhatsNew/Fresh_XP_ ... /index.htm

I got a windows xp installation disk for my T40 - and I worked perfekt
I took the the key with this prog and I didnt had to activate WIN XP

(probably you have to,when taking the one you got with your Thinkpad)

it is step by step - very easy.

may be this helps!
as it helped me in this situation

Thanks GomJabbar and etoby. I called IBM back and this time gave them a real "sob" story. They seemed very confused about things (which apparently helped me) and finally agreed to send me the Japanese recovery discs. $54 or so with shipping. Sure beats the Bill Gates foundation...LOL.
Problem solved. Strange, but I spoke to some lady in India who was very understanding of my situation. I suppose that if I had spoken with an American again (first phone call), I would not have gotten anywhere again. Lenova does have some good points! :o

I just re-read all the posts in this thread...etoby, what you said would work and I've done this myself with American (English) windows, but I need Japanese windows which I don't have installed (and I was needing), so this wouldn't work to begin with in my present situation. My school has a site license for Japanese XP, but it doesn't extend to the students, so I can't really use it. Anyway, I was trying to avoid a "clean install" of WinXP and then having to download all the drivers, and software (Presentation, Utilities, Updater, etc.) and then having to install that too...I'm very busy as principal of my school and really didn't want to spend my time doing this for one student. If it was for a whole fleet of Thinkpads we bought, I would do it and have...but in that case, I would just install everything on one and then clone each HDD with Ghost (changing the computer name later)....a real short cut I've used with good success.

GamJabber...thanks for the link but if it was really necessary to buy a Japanese copy of WindowsXP Pro, I could just get this kid's parents to buy it in Japan (probably in Akihabara, near Tokyo) and send it to us FedEx, and it would cost between $150-$200, so the mark-up for over-seas OS's is rediculously high...Who's making all the bucks here anyway? Bill Gates?? Wow, he continues to make me hate Windows all the more.

Hopefully I'll receive the Japanese WinXP-Pro recovery discs for the T30 without issue from IBM in the next few days, as promised, and we'll be all set.

To tell you the truth, I figured the sticker shock would get you. Who wants to fork out that kind of jack? :(

Then I hope for you that this will work out.
If they promised it should....!

I thought that its more a problem to get any Win XP -
how old is this student? (in this american english everybody studies anything - in german that's more different,I am a student but 21 years old)
If he is older and not too bad in english it shouldnt't be a big problem to use it in english - for most things in WINDOWS ,no reading is required.

Thanks for your posts. This student is 17. He is a high school student and next year when he graduates he will be going to a Japanese university. At first we were just going to go with the English Windows route, but he really needs to insall Japanese Office as it has an incredible amount of tools on it that English Office doesn't...something he's going to need at his university. Japanese Office just doesn't work very well on English windows...thus, our change of plans to get ahold of Japanese XP.

Well, I'm back to square one. I've been looking for the recovery discs in the mail as when IBM sends stuff out it comes quick. Instead, when I got home this evening I had a message from IBM saying they can't fulfill my request. Some lady who's English I couldn't understand gave me a phone number and case number and after listening to the message 7 times I thought I had all the information right. I called the 800 number and it is some single's line. The case number is probably wrong too...will call them from work tomorrow where I have pertinent information written down.

At this point I need someone who has either a Japanese version of the recovery discs to contact me or to let me use their T30 serial# to order these. Otherwise, I'll have to get the boy's parents to spring for WinXP and send it to me...making the purchase of the Thinkpad a lot more than what they probably could have gotten it for in Japan AND a lot more hassle for me.

Anyone? Help!

You might consider using Windows XP Professional MUI Pack. Look at the links and info below:

Froogle MUI Pack
Microsoft wrote:A localized language version of a Windows–based client cannot be upgraded to a different language version of Windows XP Professional, or to the Windows XP Professional MUI Pack. For example, you cannot upgrade a Japanese localized language version of Windows 2000 Professional to either the International English language version or MUI Pack of Windows XP Professional.

Important

To replace any other language versions of Windows with the Windows XP Professional MUI Pack, you must remove the previous Windows version and perform a clean installation of the Windows XP Professional MUI Pack.
You can only upgrade to the Windows XP Professional MUI Pack from an International English language version of Windows, or from the Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional MultiLanguage Version. Table 3.5 shows which of these earlier versions of Windows clients can be upgraded to the Windows XP Professional MUI Pack.

This is what we have for our school (Japanese school) with site license for WinXP-Pro and the MUI, but it doesn't extend to our students. It's just for our staff.

I just called a friend in Japan about the recovery discs...he's checking into it. He owns several Thinkpads and has friends who do as well. Other option, like stated before is to have the student's parents send us a Japanese WinXP and I do a clean install, then the ethernet driver and then use the IBM (Japanese version) software installer that searches your system and downloads and installs the different drivers and software automatically. I found the Japanese version of this last night on the Japanese IBM site and downloaded it. This seems to be the least hassle of all.

GomJabbar, thanks for your suggestions.
