T42p Hard Drive Replacement Problem

The original hard drive in my T42p did something ugly a couple of days ago. In an attempt to avoid being disappointed twice by the same drive, I ordered a Western Digital to replace it. I am getting an "initialization error" every time the recovery disk tries to "restore factory contents". Is this a drive problem? Is this a knucklehead problem?

Any help would be appreciated.
