Fed up with Soundmax

#1 Post by iriverconvert » Sun Oct 23, 2005 1:28 am

Hello everyone. I recently used the System Update to update the drivers for lots of devices on my T42. However, I noticed that now games like Day of Defeat: Source will crash at random times. I don't think it's a processor or memory problem, since this crash will cause the game to hang, with the sound repeating over and over again, yet there is no hard drive activity and I can end the task very simply in task manager after alt-tabbing out.

This never happened before I update to these stupid Soundmax 4 drivers. Is there a way to roll back to my factory default drivers? I tried in Control Panel>Audio>Roll back drivers, but it said there was no previous driver installed. <Rant>Typical stupid corporate @$#%- they give you "new and improved" updates which screw up your system, their website points to IBM (provide no support), and you destroy the previous drivers so you have no choice but to use their crap. <End rant>

Anyways, does anyone know how I roll back my sound drivers to the factory defaults?

The original SoundMAX drivers should be located in C:\IBMTOOLS\DRIVERS\AUDIO.

Probably the easiest way to go to the old version is to launch Access IBM, choose: Protect & Recover > Recover your computer data > Recover configuration settings. This will open to a page that allows you to 'Restore your computer to an earlier date'. Click on Next, then on the window to the right, click on the left arrow key repeatedly until you see the date you want to restore to. Follow the wizard.

iriverconvert,

I have teh same experience with the lastest Soundmax updates, a Soundmax process (SMax4PNP I guess) usually hangs on every shutdown instead of orderly shutting down. As a result, standby and hibernation sometimes hang forever. VERY annoying, pretty ugly. If you happen to run over an older version of the soundmax drivers I'd be glad to receive a copy.

Am using latest soundmax drivers from IBM and no problems...

sometimes on gaming when the video freezes and you hear looping sound its symptom of the infinite loop videcard driver problem...

anyways just uninstall the drivers you are using right now and install the ones from

\IBMTOOLS\DRIVERS\AUDIO

IF not disable onboard sound and try again, if the game still crashes then video card driver is to blame

OK.

Well, going to try reinstalling old audio drivers. Thanks for the location. I probably wouldn't have figured that out on my own! :)

I no longer get a hanging Soundmax4PNP process at shut down. I did not pay attention but recognized there was an audtio driver update since my last post - seems to be gone.

I had the same problem with Gerd. I found after updating BIOS and Configuration via Installer, this hanging Soundmax4PNP problem was gone. By the way, I don't know why the Software Installer does not pick up the latest audio driver for me, it seems I have to install it manually through the website.

I've been having the same problem with shutdown on my T42 since grabbing the newest drivers as well.
