Will the 7K100 100GB HD work on my T43p?

#1 Post by Chordate » Sun Oct 23, 2005 2:00 pm

I know that people have been getting 2010 errors with it, but I am wondering if there has a BIOS upgrade that has allows the computer to use that HD. Also, will that be faster than my standard 60 gig 7200 rpm drive?

I don't think so, I wanted to upgrade too, but so far the problem still exists. But my friend was able to upgrade his T42p successfully.

Only the T43 has the 2010 problems mentioned. It's because it has SATA on the motherboard, but the hard drive is PATA (the common type). It's the SATA to PATA converter and BIOS that cause the problem.

AFAIK, all you need to be sure of on the T40, is that you get the common PATA drive, and that it physically fits (check drive dimensions).

The T40 does not have a Serial ATA connector and therefore does not have the 2010 problem.

I have a T43p (model 2668-P2U) with the 100 gig 7200 rpm drive and it works fine. Can't the same bios on my system be used with the T43 to get around the problem?

I don't think using the bios version in your system would get around the problem because it seems to be the firmware in aftermarket non-IBM drives that is causing the problem. And the IBM HD firmware updater doesn't seem to update aftermarket drives firmware, even though those drives are exactly the same except for the firmware version.

Downgrading the BIOS to 1.03 will solve the 2010 issue, however, I guess most of the users would not do so.

I have a T42p 2373Q1U - with BIOS 3.12

Would the 7k100 work in my machine? I can live with warning messages as long as I can get past them and it all still works OK... TIA.

Notice the Sticky: Problems with non-thinkpad option drives on T43 thinkpads. Only T43's are affected with the 2010 issue.
