X21 noise -- is it usually the fan?
I have an X21 that just is turning 4 years old and still good, but I wish I could get rid of the noise. I always assumed that it was the fan and that I couldn't do anything about it. Is this common? Can I get a quiet fan with a replacement fan? Any help is appreciated.
Hmm... what kind of noise is it?
In an X21, there's two things that move: the hard drive and the fan.
When my fan was dying, it actually got a little quieter. However, that may be different for you.
A dying HDD can also give weird sounds. The X21's HDD should be dead silent, except when seeking (where it'll make a quiet clicking noise). My new HDD is noisier, so I can't hear the new fan very well...

Current: 365XD (120 MHz, 72 MiB, 6.4 GB, 4x CD-ROM, 10.4" TFT)
Past: T61p 15.0" QXGA, T60p 15.0" QXGA, X61 Tablet SXGA+, R51e 14.1" XGA, X21
Past: T61p 15.0" QXGA, T60p 15.0" QXGA, X61 Tablet SXGA+, R51e 14.1" XGA, X21
It is constant when the X21 is on ---- ALL the time, except if I put it into suspend/sleep mode -- but then I would expect the fan and HDD to be quiet then.
If I am working on it in battery mode, which I do very little, and I haven't done anything for a while, something shuts off and it goes quiet, until I touch any key, and then the noise starts up again.
I would describe it as a higher-pitched "whine" but it still reminds me of a fan noise.

The X21's fan kicks in at 50 C, so if it's constant, even from a cold start, it's the HDD.
Is it the original HDD? If so, it's too loud. The original HDD is dead silent except when seeking.
