New to me T23 - Battery questions

#1 Post by Shack80 » Mon Oct 24, 2005 4:13 am

I just won a bid on ebay for a t23 (1.13 PII-M 512mb, 30 gb 5400, DVD-Rom)

I am going to just assume that the battery on this off lease thinkpad is worn out. I am hoping to get som egood info on were to buy a replacement battery and what to look for.

1. Are the rebuilt batteries something to consider?

2. What new not from the IBM website Batteries are good?

3. Is it safe to use non-IBM batteries?

4. What are some quality merchants to buy batts from?

5. If I get a ultrabay batt ( new) How much time approx wil it add? and If it is in the Laptop, can I swap the main batt without powering down?

Thanks for anyhelp, this is my 2nd laptop, though in reality my first. The one I have now is an ancient Thinkpad pentium 133, that can barely do the internet, though it was a freebie a year ago from my father, so I could not complain.

If you are going to replace the main battery for your T23, folks around these parts recommend that you replace it with one from a T30. You will get longer battery life.

Regarding you question about the ultrabay battery. Mine has added around 2.5 hours to my T23. You can remove it while the system is running (hot swap). There is an icon in the system tray that you double click on to stop any removeable devices (PCMCIA cards, optical drives, secondary hard disks, etc). Then one the device is of, it is safe to remove.

I swap my combo drive with my ultrabay battery a lot without any problems. It was designed to be this way.

Thanks for the heads up on the T30 batt, any extra life would be great. Glad to hear the ultra bay batt adds so much time, that is a must have it seems.

I still have some questions about refurbed batteries and good place to buy batts online, the price on the IBM site are a bit higher than I can deal with.

Check eBay for the T30 4400mAh batteries. The T30 batt will work in the T23. These are abt $52USD. Make sure you have the 72W charger tho.

"Why does the charger make a difference?"

I think the reference was to the difference between a 72w & 56w charger. I've been told that (off eBay) you may end up with a T23 & a 56w charger. The 56w charger could be problematic.

Do a search for "56w", read the posts and decide whether you'd want to take the chance.

Thats corect, from IBM, the 56w chargers are paired with the 3200/3600mAh batts. The 72w is supplied with the higher capacity batteries(4000/4400). Has something to do with the charge rates.
