Quite some time ago, I believe I tried with
both smart modem and lt modem drivers on
Fedora Core 3 but the attempt was unsuccessful.

No luck with Ubuntu Breezy or Suse 10.0 - both produce "no dial tone" errors when I try to connect.

you could try the slmodem driver.

what kernel and what distro are you running?

Can you run:

# lspci -v

and look for the part about Communication controller and post that output?

sorry I am a moron - the smartlink modem is the slmodem. However if you google slmodem you will find a link to a slmodem sourceforge project and more help with slmodem. I am trying to setup slmodem now, the driver compiles and looks like it is running, but it is not dialling. I'm using debian kernel 2.6.12 on an X22. The chipset in my X22 I think is the same as in the R23. If i get it working I will post what I did.

I know the hardware itself works because it is working under windows.

Under Ubuntu and Suse and my TP42, the only modem driver that works is the commercial Linuxant driver; I tested the free 14.4 version, just to make sure that I'll be able to use the US$19 full-speed version if I need it.

just reporting back I have had no luck with the slmodem drivers. I will have to either downgrade my kernel or wait for an updated modem. I cannot use the lt modem for the same reason (kernel is too new). I think I may be better off just getting a well supported PCMCIA modem.
