60GB 7200 on T41p

#1 Post by djjino » Tue Oct 25, 2005 7:38 am

The product specifications sheet states that my notebook has a 7200 rpm hard drive. I wasn't aware that IBM made hard drives with 7200 rpm. I thought the max was 5400 rpm so far. Is IBM correct or am I correct?

Hi,

IBM Is correct, and the drive is made by Hitachi. It is a rebranded 7K60. Note however that hitachi's HGST (the maufacturer) is in fact the same people that were before part of the IBM storage division. (IBM just divested this part of the company to form HGST with Hitachi as the main stockholder)
760CD -> 770X -> 600E -> T23 -> T40 -> T42 -> T400 -> T430

Though you can get 7K60 and fix it in some other laptop, IBM is the only one that provides 7200RPM HDDs in laptops by default. This is possible with their APS accident protection system that stops the HDD if it detects fast motion.

Hitachi bought the IBM hard disk divsion.
I don't think the drive is rebranded, it's a Hitachi. IBM doesn't have to make every bit they put in it, likewise they don't make the graphics card either, ATI does that :>

The drive isn't quite "rebranded", but it does have an important IBM FRU sticker, making it an IBM part.
