I bought regular-size external USB CD-drive. I use very rarely and since I don't carry it with the laptop I didn't see any point bying superslim/-sexy model but purchased the cheapest familiar brand CDRW I could get at that time. It is black though ;-).

Which model do you have?

Anyway, I'm using the X2 UltraBase with an UltraBay 2000 DVD-ROM on mine...

Unfortunately, going the UltraBase route is *NOT* cheap.

I'm using a Compaq USB Multibay with Compaq CD-RW/DVD drive. It needs external power adaptor since I couldn't use the powered USB port with it. I rarely use it, and only at home, so I don't mind. I don't take it with me, I have USB memory and it's the best solution for files coping from one computer to another, for me.

I thought to buy one good drive when I got the computer but finnaly I got this drive as a compensation for the supply delay of the computer. After I got it I realized that I don't need more than it.

I bought an external (but not really portable) CD-RW burner from Creative (never could find the model number). Works fine when I use it - mostly for importing music CDs into Sonic Stage (Sony) to transfer to music player.

I think it was NZ$150, which was/is pretty cheap here.

Make sure you get one that can boot IBM's factory Recovery CD. I have two external drives and neither could boot (as I posted this problem earlier).

FYI, I just bought an used USB Slim Combo drive with IBM part number 73P2994. The internal drive is made by TEAC, part number DW-224E.
I checked around and it seems that optical drives that come with Thinkpads are mostly made by TEAC (OEM?). Perhaps this will solve my problem once and for all.
Haven't received the drive yet but if this don't work, I'm getting an X4 Ultrabase!

I wonder why some USB external CD drives work and some don't, especially when there's a BIOS setting for boot order? My cheap Creative worked fine booting from the Recovery CDs.
