Experiences w. serial no. after EZ Serv MB replacement

#1 Post by pae77 » Wed Oct 26, 2005 10:27 am

I just sent in my T30 to EZ Serv have the infamous memory slot problem fixed under warranty (they are doing it under warranty even though the machine is out of warranty, I think perhaps because I initially reported the problem to them while the machine was still under warranty). Anyway, obviously they will have to replace the system board.

I have heard so many accounts of people getting their machines back after system board replacement with the technician having failed to follow proper procedure and program the old serial number into the EEPROM on the new board. In an effort to get them to do it right the first time, I taped a copy of the appropriate pages from the Hardware Maintanance Manual to the laptop with the relevant parts highlighted and a reminder note to the tech to please make sure to do this part of the procedure. But I wonder if they will pay attention to the request or even bother to read it? From all I have heard to date, it sounds like they are lazy and not meticulous in their work, at least with respect to this issue.

Anyway, I was also wondering if anyone who has had the system board replaced by EZ Serve EVER got their machine back with the serial number properly programmed into the EEPROM the first time around?

yeap, me too. no probs with the updated serial number.

On the side note, updating S/N yourself is pretty easy thing to do, take about 15 seconds or so :)

It's good to hear that there are some positive experiences on this issue. Perhaps the people who posted about finding the serial number being missing after system board replacement by EZ Serv are the exception rather than the rule. I hope so.

The ThinkPad T30 is under an ECA until febraury 2006 as i remember

If they fail to change the serial number, you can always use the Maintenance diskette v1.72

Yeah, but try to get your hands on hold of one! The latest version I could find available (clandestinely) online is 1.69. IBM refuses to sell them to end users. You must be an IBM business partner AFAIK.

I don't remember which version I used (I think it was linked to a Japense IBM support page), but I reflashed my S/N manually using directions from this site.

It's not hard to do on your own, but you do need to have the right procedures (your machine model number and some other characters have to prefix the serial when you enter them in).

Sorry, what does "ECA" mean?
