1.8" Harddisk by Toshiba
1.8" Harddisk by Toshiba
have any of you X40/41 owners tried the 60GB HD by Toshiba?
I was wondering if it was without the noisy quirks that the Hitachi ones have.

There's three different connectors.
Hitachi IDE (what the X4x uses)
Hitachi ZIF (another incompatible connector)
Seagate ZIF (a third incompatible connector)
They all use the same protocol, but a different connector.
Now, if you don't have a problem with the HDD sticking out of your laptop by a couple of inches, the Hitachi IDE connector is the same as a 2.5" IDE connector. So, you could have a standard 2.5" HDD sticking out by a couple inches.

Ok... I have examined this matter a bit further.
The toshiba connectors are basically the same pin system as teh hitachi ones. The difference is that they place the connecter differently on the drive compared to hitachi and thus renders them useless in a x40/41. Unless IBM makes a different adaptor for the HDs I guess we are stuck with the incredibly crappy hitachis.
I am very dissatisfied by how much of an annoyance the hitachi drives constant high toned noises and the drive head parking clicks produce.
I was at a business meeting and the clicks drew too much attention to them from the clients who looked at the thinkpad occassionally when it clicked.
I seriously hope either IBM or Hitachi gets a grip and produces something that actually works in a business environment...
Maybe I should have bought a x32 or Portege R200 instead

There are people who have reported that the drive is far more silent under Linux, or when running from a clean Windows installation. Mine sure was silent when booted from the Hitachi drive tools. Has it been verified if the constant clicking is actually a drive issue, or due to some IBM background process?

I don't think Seagate has 1.8" drives, they only list 2.5" and 1.0" on their site. And you forgot the Toshiba connector. For those who still haven't seen it, here's the Hitachi and here's the Toshiba drive. It should be obvious from the pictures that the Toshiba won't fit in your X40 and the Hitachi won't fit in your iPod. If this comes up one more time I think it should be made a Sticky. There's three different connectors.

Anyone who installed a clean XP can report anything? Did you have any clicks before that aren't existed anymore?
I don't want to reinstall windows here. Too much data and programs are already installed. If it is sure - I may consider doing it.
