Fan error on my X22

#1 Post by MASS » Thu Oct 27, 2005 5:54 am

My fan died I got the fan error message and I was beeping and after 2-3 second it turned the computer off, I bought a new fan for my X22, and installed it, and I hear the fan is working now, and my system ´don´t shutdown, but I get the error messages "Fan error" still, I can enter the BIOS. Do I have to reset the motherboard or what ?

Hmm... looks like a problem with the motherboard fan header... :(

Yes, that should do it. Just to make sure, keep the thing removed for an hour.

Also, try updating your Embedded Controller Program.

However, seeing as it obviously worked before... I'm going to say that your fan header, most likely the tachometer line, is fried. You *COULD* try putting 3.3V (or, if that doesn't work, 5V) on the line, but that's an amazingly dirty hack. And, that won't work if it's the fan *CONTROLLER*, and not the header.

The only way to fix a fried fan controller is to get a new motherboard, unfortunately. And, fixing a fried fan header is a royal PITA, and it may well be easier to get a new mobo and be done with it, because it involves precise soldering.

The part number for the keyboard screws on the X22/23 is 46L4976. (Keep a copy of the hardware maintenance manual handy for things like this - it's 24P2975.pdf)

You want to go to maintenance parts site on IBM's site.

Now, the tricky part is that finding it is a total bear. It's not easy to find in the US, which appears to be the easiest by far.

MASS, are things better now? In the 600 series, even if a fan wasn't broken, you get the fan's error beeps and a code if the CMOS battery is bad. Replacing that often fixes the fan issue. The wrong date and time once you're in Windows is another indication that the CMOS battery needs changing.
