display problem after cleaning with window cleaner

#1 Post by wiesl » Thu Oct 27, 2005 9:04 am

Hello!

I cleaned the screen of my T43p (Hydis 1400x1050 display) with a normal window glass cleaner. Something ran on the bottom inside the display. Then there were some spots (around 0.5cm) where I could see that this is not normal. After some time (around 5 hours) most of the spots has gone away, but there is still one line and a very light smooth white area on the bottom of the display.

Of course the spots are not on front of the display, they are behind the glass.

Any ideas how to remove that?

Thank you for the answer.

Ciao,
Wiesl

Short of opening the LCD, I doubt that you will be able to get rid of it, aside from maybe time. :(

I know that it is a little late to tell you, but you should never use glass cleaner on a LCD.

There is a section in the FAQ with recommendations on how to clean the LCD.

I always used this method for any kind of TFT screens and never had problems with it.

How can I do this? Is it dangerous?

Thank you.

First off....your Hardware Maintenance Manual (see FAQ) will show you how to remove the LCD, but it will not show you how to open the LCD.

Second...opening the LCD is not for the faint at heart. It can be quite intensive. One little mistake and you could go from a spot on the display to no display at all.

Airing it out might help, but unlikely. In another post somewhere in the forum someone referred to this type of damage as a capillary action, wherein the LCD draws the liquid up into the display thus causing the problem that you are having.

Read the posts by beeblebrox in this thread, if you're not faint of heart.

Cleaning any LCD with Window Cleaner (e.g. Windex) is Dangerous. Over time, the Ammonia in the Window Cleaner will react with the Plastic Polymer Coating on the LCD..eventually turning it Yellow and Brittle. I would go with either simple Kim Wipes or Klearscreen.

Christopher Wolf is correct. A couple of supporting links below.

Fairleigh Dickinson University's recommendations

Samsung's recommendations

Please note that petroleum benzene is mentioned. While this may be safe for your LCD, it is not safe for your health. It is a known carcinogin. AFAIK it cannot be purchased by consumers in the US.

Regarding Kim Wipes or Klearscreen, I have not looked into their use. Probably OK.

Since I find myself cleaning screens all day long, I use a 50/50 mixture of water and rubbing alcohol, which cleans well and leaves no streaks. Works like a charm for me with a soft cloth.

The main mistake you made was applying the cleaner directly to the screen and allowing it to pool at the bottom and get past the bezel.

No mater what you choose to use, apply it to a soft cloth and wipe the screen with the cloth.

I don't touch my T43p screen so I seldom have ever had to clean. Most the time a slightly damp cloth rubbed lightly does it for me.
