If one does a fresh XP install on a thinkpad, how much speed increase can one expect?

It doesn't make the "system" faster. It only makes the system "seems" faster.

Plus, the answer to your question really depends on how messed up the currently installation of XP is right now.

A lot. XP can get really badly f**ed up after some time of use, or even after one misfortunate installation of a bad app. Mine, for example, can't 1) open pdfs 2) acess wlan 3) run Outlook. I have tried all kinds of fixes to no avail. Reinstall, here I come!

i did a fresh install on my 3VU this weekend and i couldnt be happier. the windows boot was faster on the preinstall however the startup items in windows would take forever. now it takes slightly longer to get into windows, but its 100% usable within 2-3 seconds
