can't reinstall USB controllers
can't reinstall USB controllers
So I was having a problem getting my t42p to recognize a USB key (kept trying to install a driver under XP, and coming up "driver not found"). I uninstalled all of my USB controllers in the device manager, per a suggestion I found in another thread. However - when plug-n-play tries to reinstall the controllers, I get:
"The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry. This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later."
ACK - Now I've got no USB support at all!
I tried rebooting a bunch, and re-installing the intel chipset drivers from the Software Installation utility, but that seemed to have no effect on the USB Controllers, which continue to show up in the Device Manager with little yellow exclamation points.
Does anyone know where I can get a working set of inf's for these? Are they buried in some other category in the S/W Installation utility?

OK, I did some looking around on my T42 Win XP Pro, and here is what I found.
Note that some of the files are located in more than one folder. All files are dated 8/4/2004 12:08 AM.
The following *.inf files are needed for the usb controller. These files are located in the C:\WINDOWS\inf\ folder.
1. drvindex.inf
2. usb.inf
3. usbport.inf
4. layout.inf
5. dwup.inf
The following drivers are needed for the usb controller:
Located in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ folder:
1. usbd.sys
2. usbuhci.sys
3. usbehci.sys
4. usbhub.sys
5. usbport.sys
The following drivers are needed for the usb controller:
Located in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\ folder:
1. usbuhci.sys
2. usbehci.sys
3. usbhub.sys
4. usbport.sys
5. hccoin.dll
6. usbui.dll
The following drivers are needed for the usb controller:
Located in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\ folder:
1. hccoin.dll
2. usbui.dll
I hope this helps. If you find which files are missing, perhaps you can copy them from another computer. These are Windows files not IBM files.

For those playing along at home, the answer was: reinstall windows.
Actually, (R)epair from the windows XP cd - which actually worked without nuking my entire disk for once (who knew?). Anyway, it appears that my whole windows/inf directory had been wiped out by forces unknown, and is now happily repopulated with all sorts of crap - including the files mentioned above.
This allowed me to get the usb controllers working again, which allowed me to connect a usb flash drive, which allowed me to boot to dos to upgrade the firmware of my multi-burner, which was the *original* issue that started all this.
Of course, turns out the multi-burner firmware was already up-to-date, and so it continues to not be able to read its own burned dvd's.
So now I'm back to where I was over a week ago, minus a couple gigs of sorely needed disk space for an automagic "system restore checkpoint". (Checkpointing the broken setup I previously had, I assume.)
I hate computers.

I am glad you finally got your USB ports working.meeotch wrote:So now I'm back to where I was over a week ago, minus a couple gigs of sorely needed disk space for an automagic "system restore checkpoint". (Checkpointing the broken setup I previously had, I assume.)

Regarding System Restore, check out my post in the following thread (which I made earlier today).

Yeah - I probably should just turn it off... just bemoaning what ought to be a useful feature, but turns out to be just a huge waste of disk space, unless you're prepared to feed it even *more* disk space.
A better plan would probably be to get windoze working the way I like it, then make a drive image, and just nuke the C: partition every couple of months.
