Problems with the sound output on my T42

#1 Post by gforce » Thu Oct 27, 2005 7:30 pm

Hey guys,

The output volume was pretty high on my new T42 up until last week when I installed the latest SoundMax drivers. The maximum volume has decreased by a fair amount now. Has anyone noticed this?
Is it safe to revert back to the default drivers?

I have been keeping my drivers up-to-date on my T42 and I haven't noticed any decrease in volume. Note that the volume control has several settings for volume.

1. Volume (Master volume control)
2. Wave (Wave playback volume control)
3. SW Synth (Midi playback volume control [AFAIK])
4. CD Player (Analog CD playback volume control - does not affect digital CD playback volume)
5. Microphone
6. Line In

EDIT: I forgot the Hardware (Master) Volume Control which is controlled by the 3 round buttons next to the blue Access IBM button.

That's strange. My T42 has ver. 5.12.1.5160 and the ThinkPad software installer states that there are no updates available. :?

I have the same version as kyrotech. From the following site download this version. Once you download it, then double-click on the file to execute it. Follow the wizard. Next run Software Installer to install the updated driver.

Audio driver for Windows 98SE/2000/XP - ThinkPad R40, R50/e/p, R51, T40/p, T41/p, T42/p, X31, X32, X40

Yeah...I've already downloaded that. Thanks anyway.

Just to be clear. Once you download a driver from IBM's site, there is a two-step process to install the driver.

First you have to double-click on the file you just downloaded. This pulls the compressed driver files out and places them in an appropriate directory on your hard drive, however the driver is still not installed.

Secondly you have to either run Software Installer to install the driver or else go to the directory the compressed driver files were sent to and execute (double-click on the file) setup.exe in that directory.
