Using a T43 with a Projector

I have a Thinkpad T43 which when selecting fn + F7 to switch to both display on the LCD and projector, the display image shrinks on the LCD.

Worse though, the display on the projector is off centre even at the IBM thinkpad splash screen stage before the OS has even loaded. I have connected other model Thinkpads and desktop PC's to the projector and they are all fine.

Has anyone else come across this problem? If so, any advice would be much appreciated.
