RAM problem with my new T23

#1 Post by Ochoa » Fri Oct 28, 2005 12:12 pm

Hello,

I have a question about the memory specs for the T23. I got a good price on memory and bought 2 x 256 MB (infineon). As far as I know I got the right specs, but as soon as windows is up there comes problem message showing a memoy location / write problem. First I updated the Bios to 1.18 and nothing changed, then I updated the embedded bios and now windows does not even start up. I get a blue screen right away in which it is recommended to uptate or modify the bios to allow "shadow". How can one select this option on the t23 1.18 bios?

Here are the specs of the RAM I*ve got (the chips are much smaller than the original IBM (HENIX-Corea):

SDRAMM Memory, Takt PC133, 144 pins in SO-DIMM, Funktion: Unbuffer NON-ECC Memory, Kapazität: 256 MB, DRam Organisation: 16Mx16, Spanung: 3,3, CL: 3

According to Crucial.com, they recommend CL=2.
Have you trying running memtest (www.memtest.org) to see if the memory is okay?

Hi, thanks foryour response. Yes, I checked the memora and it is ok so the problem is elsewhere. I suspect ti has to do with some Bios setttings that have to do with the shadow for the OS. A curios thing is that I had the T23 running for a while with the one old stick and a new one. With the two new sticks and the Bios update I am not even able to load windows.

Has someone some hint?

Maybe the contacts in the computer are dirty.

I used to clean contacts on pc-boards with an eraser.

Not sure about so-dimm contacts. Also, there is pressure so one would suspect cleaning is not neccessary.

Take both new sticks out, put in the old stick and see if it works right.
If it does pull out the old stick and put one of the new sticks in and see if it works right.
Then switch out one new stick for the other new stick and see how it acts.
Then try each new stick with the old stick.
At this point you should be able to decide which stick is at fault.

I agree....one bad stick in the stack. Your problems sound very familiar when memory goes awry.

Thanks for the replyes. I have done the test with sticks as decribed by carbon unit and I sort of came to the conclusion that the 3 new sticks sholuld have problems. I`ll check it right away again to see if I arrive to the same conclusion. The one thing I have noticed is that the new RAM fits somewhat looser in the slot as the old one and that could be a problem. Well, Ill try it again and I´ll come back here with the results.

Thanks to all.

Test report

#8 Post by Ochoa » Sat Oct 29, 2005 8:08 am

So, I did the test again and the results are:

all new RAM modules work ok when installed idividually and in both slots.

The combination of the old 256 module and a new 256 works only when the old one is intalled on the slot closer to the rear of the laptop.

Two new modules (256 x 2) does not let windows boot (I got once the problem message: ARC name for HAL and systempath cannot be generated, normally it simply doesent boot XP).

I suppose the new memory is OK.

I kept the NEW+OLD combination running in my T23 for a while and then I got the problem message again . I Installed 256 on another t23 and it seems to work ok (at leas the 1 hour I played around with it).
