Code 41 on T43

#1 Post by matthew » Sun Oct 30, 2005 1:44 pm

My Multi-burner is not "seen" by the system.

I tried to reinstall the driver, the driver is OK but still the Burner is not recognized.

Troubleshoot button on the device manager takes me to a "known issue" and suggests to go into the registry and perform the fix. I am not very comfortable doing this.

So I do this and the "fix" involves deleting two values, an upper and a lower. The Upper (don't know what this means) deleted fine, but the lower (I don't know what this means either) will not delete, a dialogue box states an error in deleting.

IBM sent me a new multi-burner but the same thing happens.

They are asking me to send it in, but I know it's not a hardware issue. (I think, since I googled code 41)

Three year warranty doesn't do much good if the software is the issue huh?

Here's my Question (finally)!

Since I cannot back up my hard drive, without a burner, is there a way to partition the HDD and save the stuff added to it since new (pics, movies, software, drivers, updates, etc.) and then use the Access IBM feature to restore the system to new, then go into the newly partitioned space to retrieve my data, and then clear that partition?

What about purchasing one of the registry cleaner / restorers ?

I am not a Knowledgeable tweaker or competent windows geek by any stretch, but I don't see the point in sending the computer in for a software issue, especially when the HDD would remain here.

Help is welcome, and appreciated

What about connecting to a PC with a good burner, share the burner and backup your stuff to it for right now. Then do a restore to factory and see if it corrects the problem with your DVD burner. Or do a system restore back to a time when the burner worked (if it ever did).

I do not have another PC with a burner, but if I can find one, how can I share it?

System restore? I backed up the HDD about 4 months ago onto cd/DVD
in case...but this isn't what you mean is it.

Get an Rj45 cable, does not have to be crossover because the thinkpad has auto detect nic. Plug the cable into both nic ports, make sure the workgroup name is the same on both pc's right click on my computer select the computer name tab and look what the workgroup name is, the default name is workgroup, do not make any changes in the domain. go to the properties of the nic card on both machines, select tcp/ip, select properties, check "use the following ip address put in 192.168.1.1 on one machine and 192.168.1.2 (if there is already a static ip on one machine match that to the other machine but change the last octet sequence) on the other it will give you a subnet mask, select close. Reboot both PCs. Go to the pc that has the cd burner and right click on the cd icon select sharing and security, select, just enable sharing, you should be able to see the cd drive in the network neighborhood of the thinkpad.

System restore is under help and support, select restore my computer to an earlier time select a date that would be prior to the time you began having problems, select next, your computer will shut down and restore, when restore is complete it will reboot, select ok, things will look different if you have made any desktop changes and program additions, however, you will be able to check and see if the cd drive is functional. System restore basically puts the registry back to points in time when the system took a "snapshot" of the files and registry, if this is not any help go back to system restore and select undo my last restoration this will put everything back to today.

Here is a quote from an earlier post I made:

You can change access to the key by launching regedt32 (as an Administrator) from Start > Run > regedt32. Right click on the key and choose Permissions... . Make sure your administrator user id is listed, and make it have full control. If you don't see your administrator user id listed, choose Add, and add the administrator user id. You may have to click on Advanced and make the admininstrator (yourself) the owner. You should reboot to make sure the changes take effect.

Note: Sometimes to delete a registry key, if you should ever desire to do so - requires you to change permissions first.

Thanks Kyocera and GomJabbar, I tried to restore the system to a period of time before the issue came about, the Burner still wasn't recognized...AND I could not revert back to the previous state, (before the restore) unlike the promise made by the software.

So I sent my T43 in. without the HDD.

I appreciate your suggestions

Sadly, it will probably come back with the same problem .. since the problem itself is likely on your drive as part of your preload. In essence all you have done is potentially delay your problem by about a week. Once you get it back .. back up your data via a network or a USB media device and recovery the box to factory preload.

If it comes back fixed, concider yourself UBER lucky . but I doubt it.

Thanks do you think that a registry cleaner / restorer would make a difference ?
