If you connect to a good home theatre amp with 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1, it will allow you to use the 5.1 speakers and basically fake the tp 2channel output to sound like 5.1. It is not the real thing, but sounds much better than the stereo. No additioal software is necessary.FRiC wrote:The built-in audio is just stereo, so that'll be 2.0 and not 2.1.
If you get a 5.1 speaker system, you could get dolby stereo with the right software.

Your build-in soundcard supplies 5.1 surround sound without problems. Even SPDIF is there. Just read the technical spec of the sound processor.
Unfortunately their lead-outs are not connected, only 2 channels are. If you have a thinkpad out of warranty, have a soldering iron, some technical acumen, you can build something.
A USB driven Creative is, of course, the better solution.

The Audigy 2 ZS Notebook that I mentioned earlier is a PC Card ("PCMCIA Card") that goes into the PC Card slot.
Creative makes several USB solutions (MP3+, Extigy, Audigy 2 NX) but they all have a large external box that plugs into the USB port.
I'm sure there are other products by other companies, but I'm not familiar with them.
