t42 and 4.1 speakers

i had a 4.1 speaker system connected to my t42 for a year and recently I noticed that there is no sound from the rear speakers (neither for music CD's nor standard windows sounds). I tested all the speakers and cables separately and they work fine when connected to the "front speakers" outlet on the hub.

before I suspect the speaker hub hardware is busted (strange that both rear speaker connection should fail simultaneously?), can somebody confirm that

1) the T42 soundcardcard (soundmax integrated digital audio) should work with 4.1 speakers (at least they all should make noise, right?? - I am so sure they did in the past, but maybe somehow I was imagining it all along)
2) there isnt some windows setting that somehow disabled them.
3) anything else non-hardware related that I might've overlooked?

Question: how exactly do you connect your speakers? Typically for 4.1, you need a front-out and a rear-out port on the soundcard. The Thinkpad doesn't have the rear-out port.

Also, what speakers are those? Maybe someone knows things related to particular models is why I'm asking...

pick-up a Audigy 2 ZS or how that thing is called.
Anyway, thats a 7.1 laptop PCMCIA soundcard.
And there also is a Audigy Extigy (or something like that) which is a laptop soundcard which can be connected via usb.

There you are, problem solved
