Kingston RAM question
Kingston RAM question
I'm looking to add 1GB RAM to my X41-2525
Checked Kingston's website and saw I need model # KTM-TP3840/1G, which also carrys an IBM FRU #73P3843
However, KVR533D2S4/1G is much cheaper than the above part.
The spec looks like it's capatible. So are they the same part and KVR533D2S4/1G is just the OEM part number?

I also wanted add a 1GB memory module to my T43 so I asked the same question to Kingston EU. They said they did NOT recommand using that module (KVR533D2S4/1G) on my laptop cuz it hasn't been tested on any specific motherboard, however, the module (KTM-TP3840) is designed for IBM Thinkpad so it will be 100% compatible.
I still can't decide cuz it's way too expansive here (185 euros should be more than 200 bucks...) And some eBayers claim KVR533D2S4/1G will be 100% compatible as well... I'm still looking for a place to get it for a cheaper price.
Btw, do you know what kind of memory I will get if I purchase directly from IBM/Lenovo website??

1. It is the same memory, just not been tested on IBM Thinkpads. So what?! There is no physicly difference.
2. I think that IBM sells Kingston memories.
AFAIK, the only difference is the label on it. You have lifetime warranty and there should be nothing to worry about. If it answers the memory requirements - they should be responsible it will work. The difference in models name is only to take more money. This is my opinion.
I also tested my memory with the PC Doctor boot tool and it is 100% ok.

Just to break the ice.
I have trown al sorts of no-name, kingston, dane-elec, and such in thinkpads, and never had troubles.
You think they would sell untested ram if it would't work in any model / laptop?
No, its just a way to make more monney... because the chipnummers are even the same on most cases

BTW, I checked with Transcend and they also have one specific for Thinkpads.
If I just look for DDR2-533 200pin SO-DIMM 1GB, I get TS128MSQ64V5J
However, if I do a search for my X41 I will get a part numbered TS1GIB3844.
According to Transcend's tech support, TS1GIB3844 is 100% tested with Thinkpad laptops and TS128MSQ64V5J is not. Whatever that means???
Personally I agree with RS_003 that they're probably the same DIE. But because I'm buying it online and TS1GIB3844 is only $20US more in cost, I figure I'd rather not take the risk.
