Using the X40 with an external monitor and the lid closed

#1 Post by M276527 » Tue Nov 01, 2005 11:59 pm

did a quick search and couldn't find an answer, so here goes.

I have been considering the purchase of an external LCD monitor to use with my X40. I'd like to just drop my X40 into the dock and hit the power button while the lid is closed and have it power up using an external display, keyboard and mouse.

Is this possible? Are there any heat concerns? Any suggestions on a max external monitor resolution or size? What about automatic detection of a "home" verus "away" profile to automate this?

Thanks for the help!

This is exactly what I do. When I get home, I just dock my computer, press the power button, and voila! My external monitor is a Samsung 172x and keyboard/mouse combo is the Gyration Ultra.

There are no heating issues. The only complaint I have is that the external mouse only works after it logs onto windows, so if you have a system password, you'll have to use the laptop keyboard.

If it's a USB keyboard/mouse (which I assume it is), then yes. If it's PS/2, they should work during bootup as well.

Hmm .. my last workstation was an older X40 running on a docking station, and I was able to use both my mouse and my keyboard via the USB ports right from boot. Are you running on the latest bios?
