new X40 expected delivery and mini HD suggestion?

#1 Post by red bioroid » Wed Nov 02, 2005 1:15 am

Hi :

I've ordered through Lenovo\IBM the Thinkpad X40 (laptop of my dreams) for it's sale price and small size. I got the one with a mini 20GB Hard Drive 4200rpm.

1. I was told by the sales rep that it would be 5 days from time of order that it will ship. I order the laptop through him on Oct 31 but later the order status tells me the expected shipping date is Dec 3 and the Status field says "Packing". What or who should I believe? Does it take a month to build a laptop and pack?

2. I can't stand the mini 20GB hard drive for its small capacity and plan to replace it with the highest capacity HD available. Is this hard drive really 1.8inch form factor? I have had 3 Hitachi 2.5 HD so far and they've been perfect. I've checked Seagate too. It looks like the biggest Hitachi 1.8 available is 60GB. Where can I get this and what other reliable brands are available? No, I can't stand whiny HD but my Hitachis nevered gave me any problems.

thanks
Feb 2008=Thinkpad X61s; 2x faster than X40 but not as asthetic.
Dec 2005=Thinkpad X40; perfect, but bigger than 240x.
Jan 2005=Thinkpad 240x; used; fast but dead pixels doomed it.
2003=Thinkpad 240; used,
1998=new Toshiba Tecra 740CDT. Pricey, heavy & last 5 year.

Yes, the drives have 1.8 inch form factor. Another manufacturer is Toshiba, but I am not sure whether their drives can be used in the X40. This is a question of the connector used, and there exist different versions for the 1.8 inch drives.

By the way, I wonder a bit about that you ordered a 20 GB model, because replacing the drive with a larger one is probably not the easiest/cheapest way to getting a larger sized X40.

At the moment, the ONLY drives that fit in the X4* series are the IDE versions of the Hitachi Travelstar C4K40 and C4K60. (You can theoretically use a 2.5" drive but it will stick out of the machine.) The Hitachi ZIF versions with the same model numbers wil not fit. The Toshiba 1.8" drives use an entirely different connector that will not fit. No other manufacturers make 1.8" drives. The current max capacity of the Hitachi is 60Gb.

Why wouldn't getting a 60GB to replace the 20GB HD be hard? Is the hard drive soldier to the board? I was hoping my current 100GB would be compatible but it is not. So what do I need to do to do the 60GB install and I got the WinXP CD? BTW: What do you use to boot the OS? I have a PCMCIA CDROM that autoboots , will the X40 do the same?
