Does anyone else have slowness with PDF's?

#1 Post by Jmmmmm » Thu Nov 03, 2005 2:42 pm

For some reason, PDF's perform extremely slowly on my t43. This computer has more (and faster) ram, and a faster processor than my old one (a dell 5150), but some things seems to run a lot slower, particularly adobe acrobat. Opening pdf's up isn't too bad, but closing them takes forever. And I'm not talking about 5-10 seconds, but more like 30 seconds, which is really annoying. It is a significant difference.

Is this something with the p-M processor? Does anyone else have this problem, or is it just me? If it's just me, which I would be surprised about, is there anything I can do to help this.

Are you using the Latest version of Acrobat Reader? (Around 7.01)

Also, viewing them in Firefox or IE with the Adobe Plugin is a bad idea on connections you are unsure of; even connections for which you know you have good connectivity. I ran into this problem maybe once, then never again. Maximum time it took for me to open up a 25MB *.pdf file was maybe 8 seconds. I would recommend downloading most, if not all, of the *.pdf files that you want to view. BTW, I just noticed how close your Model and System Specs are to mine. :)

Adobe keeps maintaining that with the new v7 the loads are much faster. For many files, i did notice an improvement, but for other a deep decrease in performance.

Adobe current version is 7.0.5 and it is a 20MB download. It will use more than 61MB on your HDD.
I cannot accept a 60MB load on my PC with an application that just “reads”... it is inadmissible. Adobe Acrobat reader has just become a mastodon and during the last 4 years has increase in size exponentially. I also have detected causing problem in many PCs with its plug_ins folder.

However, it should not take 30s to close any file. You probably have some problem with your installation. Best guess it is to delete your profile first at C:\Documents and Settings\XXX\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\7.0. Adobe will recreate it at next use. If problem persist, uninstall, delete profile and reinstall.

Since 3 months ago, however I had been recommending for most users of pdf files to use the free Foxit.( http://www.download.com/Foxit-PDF-Reade ... ag=lst-0-1)
- It is less than 1MB.
- No installation neeeded… (no dlls… or weird things on System32 directory.)
- Reads virtually all pdf.
- And best of all… it is FAST.

For the vast majority of users, I don´t know why bother with Acrobat Reader.

(Of course, your Thinkpad it is not at fault for those 30s. )

Yeah I always download the PDF before opening within internet explorer / firefox. When I dont, even if you close the browser window witht the PDF, the acrobat process will take ages to close

Wow thanks, Foxit is so much faster. And, it doesn't open up in the browswer anymore, which I hated. I see that I could probably have changed it, but regardless, foxit is a big improvement. First microsoft and now adobe - go firefox! Problems solved.

Closing a PDF on my system takes a 10-20 seconds if I view it embedded n Firefox. It's pretty fast in Acrobat proper.

Also, Acrobat Pro 6 and Reader are SLOW to load because it loads a bunch of mostly worthless filters on startup. I removed most of them pursuant to this post, and it now takes 2-3 seconds to load up - huge difference!

I think it's time to upgrade to 7 though...time to get rid of this 6.0 bloatware

PDFs close within a second on my machine (whether it be using the Reader itself or within Firefox). Just curious, did you ever format your computer?

Adobe Reader Speedup (available free at

http://www.tnk-bootblock.co.uk/prods/misc/

accomplishes the same thing as Kenn's link but, to some extent, allows you to choose the plug-ins to disable.

I like the Foxit too and it reads Japanese PDF's which is a real plus. Is there anyway for it to open in the browser window like Adobe? I'd like to use it completely and get rid of Adobe if I could.

Indeed. For those who need Adobe Reader, Adobe Reader Speed-up is a good companion. What it does it to load those basic plugins only. Barely ever you will use any other plugin...

This year I have seem many PCs also no be able to open Adobe Reader files. We identify that the problem is with the Plug_in folder that Adobe has. No solution was yet found for these affected PCs. A workaround was either to remove the Plug_in folder altogether (Adobe will still work fine) or to use these Adobe Reader Speed-up.

Again, Foxit. still looks like a better solution for those that do not want 60MB+ on their drives or whose ThinkPads are getting older. Either way, or Foxit (http://www.download.com/Foxit-PDF-Reade ... ag=lst-0-1) or Speed-up (http://www.tnk-bootblock.co.uk/getfile.php?id=arsu), they are totally safe applications because noting is installed whatsoever.

w0qj asked:
Does Foxit PDF Reader support Acrobat v7.0's Enter text into the text box functions?
Version 1.3 allows you to use it as a typewriter, with some limitations. Apparently you can enter text and print but not save files in the free version. 1.3 is available at http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/pdfedit.zip

I tried it on some Michigan pdf "type-able" court forms. Foxit works, but not quite as well as Acrobat Reader. Checking boxes with Foxit, for example, requires you to move the cursor and enter a check or "x". With Acrobat Reader you just click on the box and a check mark is entered.

I don't think it would be a big deal unless you were filling in pdf forms a lot.
