A Series ....
A Series ....
Hi and thanks for reading.
I have a few questions.
Can a new Thinkpad A Series computer still be purchased? I didn't see any advertised on IBM's site.
I have an A31p that I use at work. I have a chance to get a new T42 to replace this one. Is this a good thing to do? It the T42 much better than the A31p that I currently have?
Thanks!

What are the specs on both these models?
Does the T model have all the features of the A31?
Many things can be done to an A31(p) to upgrade it.
- Processor (up to 2.6Ghz)
- Memory (up to 2Gb)
- Hard drive (7200 RPM hard drive)
- With the right parts you can add build in WIFI and/or bluetooth.
- Upgrade the CD drive to a fast DVD burner.
The great thing about the A31 are the 2 ultrabays with room for many different devices (extra hard drive, extra battery and many others). Most Ultrabay devices can also be used in the docking station and portable drive bay.
Lots of acessories and parts available cheap for the A31 on Ebay and other sites.
Only think I miss is build-in USB 2.0 support (can use a PCMCIA card for that).
Personally I am not even thinking about replacing my A31P. You won't have a hard time finding a buyer for your A31P should you decide to sell it.

ElbertR ...
I don't know the specs on the T model, I just know that it is brand new.
The A31p has 1 GB of RAM and a 1.7 GHz CPU. (I'm not sure what the RPM is ... and I don't know how to find out).
The A31p is already relatively beefy, but I can't do anything to upgrade it because this is a company machine. Therefore, any enhancements would have to come from my employer and I'm fairly that they won't make any. I have never used any of the ultrabays and the PCMCIA card slot was broken by the previous user of the laptop. Also, it doesn't have built in USB 2.0 ... which is a bummer. Considering all of this, I think the new T model is my best bet ....
However, I would still like an answer to the question in my first post:

A31p is mobile too, p4-m 1.7.
I'm assuming the company is upgrading you and don't actually own the machine. If that's the case then do what the company tells you. I say this as a help desk jockey that has to fix the problems that occur, and hardware/software combos can get trickie with propeitary solutions. Like VPN connections, specific hardware requirements for security/specialized tasks/field work etc.
If I"m assuming wrong, then please do upgrade and send me an offer, I'd like the a31p as I'm not after the best, just a good portable workhorse for freelance develpment purposes.
T41/42/43 are pretty solid from a corporate standpoint, we have several clients that use them and they've been much better behaved than T30/T20 A30/31 and some Xs we've seen in the same client base.
I work for a Private VPN provider and so I see alot of these and work out a lot of their problems in this regaurd...
Good luck.

Thanks for the responses. Both machines are owned by my company. They are not forcing me to upgrade, but since a member of my team will be leaving soon, I may be able to get his T42 that he just received. I'm getting good feedback on this forum, but I guess no one knows the answer to ....

New A series cannot be purchased .. those models went EOL a long time ago and have been withdrawn. In fact, the vast majority of these are already out of warranty. If I were in your shoes, I would look at moving to the T4 model from the A31P you have now. While the A series was a performance beast, it was also slower and heavier than the T, and will soon start to show it's age.
