firewall on t42

#1 Post by Thinkpad315 » Thu Nov 03, 2005 5:04 pm

I recently purchased a T42. I am running XP PRO w/ Sygate Personal Firewall. No need to run 2 firewalls. How do I permanently disable XP firewall. I disabled it when in use, however, the firewall would enabled itself everytime the notebook is turned on. It is annoying...any suggestion/solution. I appreciate your help! Thank you

Actually the 'correct' way to do this is to go to Start > Control Panel > Security Center, at the bottom click on Windows Firewall, which is under Manage security settings for:, then choose 'Off (not recommended)' on the General page.

The method I mentioned does shut Windows Firewall off permanently for me. I use Kerio software firewall instead of Windows Firewall. If Windows firewall keeps reappearing, then probably your laptop is not shutting down cleanly. If kyrotech's method doesn't work (Stop service and disable), you can try running the UPHClean service (a free download from Microsoft), and maybe that will fix your problem. Otherwise, the only solution I can think of is to edit the Registry. Try Google to find the Registry fix for this.

Could not find 'UPHClean' from Microsoft. Is there another source to permanently disable window's firewall. Thanks...

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

download windows UPHClean and clean system, however, still unable to turn-off windows firewall permanently when notebook is turned on? Is there an alternative to this annoying problem. I don't want to run 2 firewalls at the same time. Thanks....

kyrotech already gave the answer.

1) Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services.
2) Find "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)".
3) Right click on it, choose "Properties".
4) Set startup type to "Disabled".

On next reboot it will not start.
