What specs for your next ThinkPad?
I've still awhile to go on this T40, unless it gets destroyed, but I think I might go with a Z series next time, hopefully around late 2006. This is what I'm thinking:
ThinkPad Z6xt
14" WXGA matte display (maybe better resolution if there's one available)
Pentium M (Merom core)/Napa 64 platform
1GB DDR2-SDRAM
80GB SATA HDD @ 5400RPM or better
PCIe wireless adapter
Though if there's a T6x that gives more ports, I'd probably consider that if it's lighter. I like the fact that the Z60t has an extra USB port and SD Card reader. 2 USB ports is sometimes not enough if I have a printer, iPod, and USB key to plug in to the T40.

Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

Personal want
NOT a Sonoma Chipset(EVER. Its evil. Whatever the T42s and such use is superior)
Pentium M at 1.86 or higher
14.1 inch screen 1400x1050 Flexview (I LOVE flexview.)
X700 with 256MB of RAM socketed (Heh.) OR 9700, socketed
IBM Wireless with upgradable bluetooth
120GB/5400RPM HDD (And 7200 RPM if possible)
Thinklight with a Luxeon for a LED instead, 1 watt model (Those are HIGH POWERED LEDS. They make every 26 LED light you've seen in your life as a knockof) With dimming capablity to conserve battery life (They're more efficent the more dim they are)
T4x series shape, however with right hinge as same thickness as left hinge.
3 USB ports while keeping original. (Possibly near exaust, or sideways to the other two USB ports)
Highspeed thinkpad IR port
PCMCIA/Expresscard "Cross compatable" slot. (You can use two PCMCIA cards, or two Expresscards. Or both at once)
Different Ultrabay Slim options (Card reader, port extensions, DVD burner that can have more compatablity with newer media types, FLOPPY!!!!)
IBM ThinkPad logo on right corner as usual too.
NO CARD READER PORTS INTERGRATED
Variable fanspeed (This. Fan. Is. Driving. Me. Insane)
Chipset with heatsink or some method of cooling helping it. (Even the T42 makes noise.)
Heat plate/etc to spread heat from wifi/north/south bridge and such. (So its distributed evenly on the bottom)
Heatsink extension capablity. (Attaches externally, with two holes on bottom to allow heatpipe mount)
Better battery indiciator (Green = Full, Dim green = 3/4s, Orange = 1/2, dim orange = 1/4. Red = REALLY LOW (10%). Charging = Green and orange colors cycle.)
Harddrive protection on startup and suspend (BIOS level?)
Weight - 4 to 5 pounds
That'd be my Thinkpad heh.

In keeping with an effort to reduce e-waste, "...unless it gets destroyed" my next thinkpad could be a "ThinkPad T40 (2373-12U); 1.30 GHz PM; 512MB; 30GB 4.2k; R7500/XGA; 802.11a/b/g; M10 fan; XP Pro" when it shows up in the For Sale Forum.
Seriously, at some point we could all be looking at widescreen machines. A story on the "Tech Today" page of the 11-3 Detroit Free Press (credited to the Dallas Morning News);
"According to research firm IDC, the growing popularity of wide-screen DVD movies is prompting laptop makers to build their machines with wide screeens. The company said that about 52% of laptops shipped in 2006 will include wide screens. In 2009, a little more than 84% of laptops will have wide screens. And the screens are getting bigger. IDC said computer makers will also soon start selling laptops with 19- and 20-inch displays, whereas most top around 17 inches now."
For those of us who think like AlphaKilo470 this could be a problem,

Nah, kids want a bigger laptop to symbolize their "manhood" is big here.
That and they think heavier laptop = Makes them look buff and cooler.
Lead acid batt = Laptop is going to drop to 80 pounds
21 inch widescreen... Jeeeeeeeze

Heres a example of widescreens outnumbering anything.
Theres a bunch of 17 inch widescreens in my area
