T42 hard drive upgrade

#1 Post by laz » Sat Nov 05, 2005 3:51 pm

I know this has almost been discussed to death, but I wouldn't mind some input anyway.

I've started running out of space pretty quickly on the 40GB 5400RPM hard drive that came with my T42 so I thought I'd upgrade. I'm thinking of going with a Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 (80GB 7200RPM) and getting an external USB enclosure for my 40GB drive. I've got a couple questions before I go ahead with this:

-Firstly, I just want to make sure that this drive will actually work in my T42 (2373K1U)
-Will replacing the hard drive have any effect on the active hard drive protection? I'm assuming no but I just wanted to check.
-What filesystem should I use on the soon to be external drive so I can use it with mac osx and windows xp?
-Any suggestions for external enclosures? I'm leaning towards this one over some of the cheaper ones since it has a good amount of positive reviews.

The 80gb will work in the T42, but if it were me about to upgrade the HD, I would spend just a little more to get the new 7k100 100 gb version. Supposed to be quite a bit faster and you can never have too much space, especially if you plan on storing music and or photos.

-Will replacing the hard drive have any effect on the active hard drive protection? I'm assuming no but I just wanted to check. Nope
-What filesystem should I use on the soon to be external drive so I can use it with mac osx and windows xp? I don't know anything about Macs. If I had to guess, FAT32 would be your best bet. Google is your friend
-Any suggestions for external enclosures? I'm leaning towards this one over some of the cheaper ones since it has a good amount of positive reviwes. I have a Vantec Nexstar 3 that is nice, but runs closer to $30
For a comparison of the 100GB 7K100 & 7200.1's, check here:

I'll have a roundup out of pretty much every IDE 2.5" drive on the market today, just give me another week or two for the testing ;)

this is the enclosure I use:

so far i've bout 6 (for friends / costumers). Never had a problem, works great, good performance / compatibility, linux ok :)

the 100 GB model is best from what I read, go for it.
IBM ThinkPad T42 CTU # Pentium M 1.8 Ghz Dothan # Mobility 9600 64 MB @375/240 # Hynix 1024 MB PC2700 RAM #

Similar to my Nexstar 3, just the older version. Both got really good reviews

Upgrading from the 40GB (5k80?) to the 7k100, have you noticed any more heat or noise either from the drive or the fan due to increased heat? I'm thinking about doing this same upgrade but I'm worried about those two things.

I haven't noticed anything significant, but I usually have music on when I'm at my computer. And I'm used to the noise from my desktop with 4 fans going all the time, so just about anything is quiet compared with that.

I put in my T42 an 80GB HDD Toshiba GAX whit 16MB cache and it starts faster then my T42p and T43 whit 7.200rpm HDD and will cost half the price. Just a suggestion!
