T42p Problems
T42p Problems
I have noticed the following issues with my new T42p:
1. The Access IBM button does not work. When I press the button once I am logged in, nothing happens. It should launch the Access IBM application but does not.
2. Every ThinkPad I have owned always showed a visual cue on the screen with the audio volume is changed using the keyboard buttons. This T42p does not. When I press the volume up, down, and mute buttons, I only hear a sound but no display on the screen. Is this the default behavior?
3. My company replaced the standard 60GB hard drive with a Hitachi 80GB drive. I notice that during idle, there is a noticeable clicking noise coming from under the keyboard. Should I be concern about this?
Thanks

Sounds like a budged install.
Or you can download them from the IBM / Lenovo downloads page.
What ever you like more.
I did it 6 hours ago ... so I know you can
At that harddisk ... well Hitachi's are know to click, but you could run a few tests on it, like a Smart and/or drive fitness test.

Well, I know that the Access IBM Button should bring up the Access IBM Application; have you tried launching Access IBM from the Program Files Menu? Perhaps the Access IBM Button is not bound properly.
As to the volume control buttons, I have never encountered a problem like that...Sounds to me, though, as if it is a driver problem. Run the ThinkVantage Software Installer or the IBM Updater and check to see if you have all the latest drivers installed.
The Hard Disk always makes a clicking noise as the heads move to read different sectors on the drive, as is normal, this may be more noticable on 80GB Drives though; I suspect, however, that it hasto do more with the Drive RPM; perhaps the New 80GB is running at a higher RPM than the 60GB did?
As long as there are no faults in data access, I would not be worried about it.
By the way, you said the company replaced the standard 60GB drive with the 80GB one. It is possible that the company put on its on Install Image instead of the default that comes with most Thinkpads. I have seen companies blow away the Preloaded Image and replace it with one of their own, I assume for IT Purposes. Sometimes, this gets rid of the features that would have otherwise worked when it was on the Preload image. It happened to a Dell M60 of mine (firewire drivers and various others are gone). Did problems 1 and 2 come about after the company replaced the HDD?
EDIT: Darn, I started typing this when I saw this post originally and someone else sneaks in...oh well

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

Re: T42p Problems
Re no. 2: Go into Start, ThinkVantage, ThinkPad Configuration, Display (on the upper menu), Onscreen display, and put a check in the box next to "On screen display." You should then see the visual cues.jchauvin wrote: 2. Every ThinkPad I have owned always showed a visual cue on the screen with the audio volume is changed using the keyboard buttons. My guess is that you are missing the Hot Key Features software package. You can download it from the Software and Device Drivers - ThinkPad T42, T42p page.
