XGA, SXGA, UXGA Questions. . . . again.

#1 Post by Whyme » Sat Nov 05, 2005 8:19 pm

I'm returning my T43p UXGA because there is something wrong with the monitor.

I'm also thinking about getting a replacement with a different resolution because the UXGA is waaaaaaay too tiny for me even with changing the DPI settings.

So, I'm thinking about the SXGA display but I'm wondering if that might be too small also. Anyone have any pics comparing the three? Or any advice after looking at the three?

Is there any picture quality difference between the three?

Thanks!

I'd go with the SXGA if UXGA is too small. The SXGA and UXGA screens are the flexview screens, and are very good. The XGAs are not and are a step down in my opinion. You can always increase the DPI on the SXGA if text is too small If you get XGA and it is too big, you're stuck.

Comparisons of the relative amount of content you can fit on each screen:

Direct comparison of 15" UXGA and SXGA+

They're both excellent, and as noted above, are Flexview as opposed to the XGA screen.

If you're not going with UXGA, I'd recommend going with the 14" SXGA. Much smaller and lighter, and better battery life to boot.

You can go to a local computer store and check out an XGA on just about any laptop. The TP w/ XGA display is going to look real similar.

I use a 14.1 SXGA+ (1400x1050) Kinda small, but I find XGA is too "big" - i.e. the pixels are too big.

So, you've seen UXGA @ 15". SXGA+ at 15" is (I suspect) going to be like XGA @ 14.1".

Btw, I've been using "clear type" for a day now on the 14.1" sxga+ and I think I might like it better w/o clear type turned on. Dunno for sure, but it seems to make things a bit fuzzy.

Actually, there's very little size difference between SXGA+ at 15" and SXGA+ at 14" (pixel-pitch-wise). It's a far cry from XGA at 14."

You're getting closer once you're talking XGA at 12".

Before you give up on clear type, check out Microsoft's clear type tuning tool available as a free download. It allows you to fine tune it somewhat.
