egather2.exe and launcheg.exe taking 100% cpu!!

#1 Post by smakdown61 » Sun Nov 06, 2005 12:12 am

there was a process named egather2.exe using every single spec of cpu power according to task manager that would no go away until i manually ended it. Then, launcheg.exe popped up and did the exact same thing. Anyone know what these are?

Sounds like Spyware to me; I don't have any of those on my System and I don't think they are IBM/Lenovo Programs running in the background

egather2.exe and Launchreg.exe sound suspicious to me

I know that egather2.exe is IBM/Lenovo stuff (I did a search on IBM's site awhile back). AFAIK it collects system info for .....? Launcheg.exe is for Rescue and Recovery, so it is IBM/Lenovo also.

EDIT: Looking at the filename Launcheg.exe ie: Launch eg (egather2.exe) makes sense.

But those would only run during an update, correct? Why would they be running all the time? Furthermore, why would they suck up 100% of the CPU?

I ran it just now and got a low spike in CPU Activity.

EDIT: Hmmmm, it seems to me that, while gathering system information, it uses up quite a bit of resources...perhaps these could be improperly terminated processes from an Update Session? I haven't been able to duplicate that behavior, but I try again.
