The speed of the drive will have no EFFECT on whether a SYSTEM supports it or not. Now the SIZE of the drive can have an effect. This is based on the BIOS that is installed on your system. BIOS's can be upgraded and sometimes there are upgrades. The next limitation on drive size is OPERATING SYSTEM. However there are upgrades there also. But looking at laptop drives, none of the available drives manufactured today exceed the maximum support size for any current operating system (ie: Windows/XP, WINDOWS 2000, LINIX, UNIX, etc).

Now lets talk about the R31. I have one, It also has a Seagate 5400 30gb drive. As far as Manufacture goes, all of them that provide laptop drives, all should work.

As far as total size, I know a 60gb will work (My R31 is older than yours and it did support this size disk) I have never tried anything larger. Maybe somebody else can verify that your R31 will support a drive larger than 60gb.

Hope this helps - Storage_man
