T40 Upgrades
Hi all,
Proud new owner of a used t40 (2373)
I have a few questions if you don't mind. (I have also searched the fourms and haven't really found a sufficient answer to my questions).
1) Upgrading RAM. System has 256 MB built in + a 256 MB module installed in the 2nd bay. I really want 1GB, How do I access all memory bays to install 2 X 512 MB modules?
2) I also want to replace the a/b wireless card. How do i access the minipci card?
3) Planning on buying a 60GB 7K60 drive http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... RK:MEWA:IT
Any suggestions?
4) extended battery: how good is the extended 6600mAH battery? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 33771&rd=1
thanks in advance

Well the memory none of it is built into the board there are 2 modules
one inside under the keyboard and the other is accessible from the bottom.
For the internal wireless card if you plan to change that you will need to send it in and have it done as an upgrade at your cost.
The a/b card models are not user replaceable.

ram is easy. 1 slot on the back being protected by a cover with 1 screw and the other slot is under the keyboard, which is held in place by only 4 screws. the keyboard is really easy to remove.
the wifi card is also under the keyboard and can be accessed when you remove to keyboard to put the memory in. i dont see why you wouldnt be able to replace it? eriqesque, is it soldered in or something?
that 60gb drive will work just fine
and as for the battery, be careful, the auction you linked is for a fake. its COMPATIBLE, if you get it, get the real thing. i just ordered mine and still waiting for it

Well the WiFi card is under the palmrest not the keyboard, though they both have to removed.gosha16 wrote:the wifi card is also under the keyboard and can be accessed when you remove to keyboard to put the memory in. i dont see why you wouldnt be able to replace it? eriqesque, is it soldered in or something?
It is only the models with the a/b card that are plagued by not being a user replaceable part. This is not to say that it can not be done and be done easily. All it means is that IF... IBM were to find out that the card or the palmrest had been removed by the user, they can VOID your warranty.

I think my warranty is over anyway (not sure if a used laptop has a transferrable warranty).
anyway, looks like it can be done. looking through the manual looks pretty simple.
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... 3n6243.pdf
Once I get some time, I'm going to crack it open and see how accessible all the parts are. Heck, I'm even interested in upgrading my XGA to a SVGA+. any links or ideas on any guides on doing that?
thanks all, you've been very helpful.

the 2373 model SHOULD have a 3 year warranty that follows the thinkpad UNLESS it is a refurb..
the key is what the next three characters are..
2373???
also, you can check the warranty status on the ibm web site..
take a look at the FAQ on this site..
or use this link..

then read the FAQ anyway..
