Presentation Director causes lots of flickering/resizing

I have a T42p with the mini-dock. I use an external CRT display as a second monitor while at my desk, and run it at 1600x1200. It does work, but switching from just using the LCD to using both displays causes Presentation Director to launch into a very long dance of changing the screen resolutions, moving windows around, etc. When it is done, it is all working, but many windows have been resized down to maybe 800x600 or so. Is there any way to:

1. Speed things up a bit? The flickering and changing goes on for quite a while.

2. Prevent the windows from being resized?

I've done some google searching and looked through the forums here, but haven't found anything specific. I'd be open to ditching Presentation Director if there is something that would make this faster and easier.
