Create an install CD for Win 2k

#1 Post by thedonnybrook » Tue Nov 08, 2005 5:37 pm

I know you can do this for win xp, but i have not yet been able to do it with win2k. Is there a way to create an install disk with an existing install of win2k? My t20 didn't come with an install disk, but it has a coa. i bought the machine as a back up, and i am doing an hdd upgrade, any way i can create a win2k install disk without needing the original setup disk?

Do you have the IBM recovery partition or whatever it's called on your machine?

Anyway, look for a folder called i386 on your hard drive. That folder contains the files needed for a Win2k install. You can burn them to a CD, to do an install, but you will need to go through extra steps to make the CD bootable, though it's not too hard. Here are a couple sites:

i have been using the tutorial at barts boot disk site during my attempts, but one of the things it requires is copy the i386 files from an install cd. i don't have an install cd or a recovery partition. i think that is my problem. i will try barts tutorial again and see what i come up with. the problem is that the custom script in doesn't pick up five files it says are necessary, and i can't get bcd to run from the command line. i will also try the other one too, thanks.

If you don't have the i386 folder, you're out of luck on creating an install disk. However, there is still hope. Since you are doing an HDD upgrade, the best path for you is to look on ebay for a cheap ultrabay 2000 HDD adaptor or alternatively, to get an external USB case for the new drive. Use Acronis Trueimage to clone the old HD to the new HD. Search on my username for a recent post with a link to the demo of Trueimage 8.

The only folders named i386 I have on my clean XP install thinkpad are subfolders. Don't recall what the case was with 2k.

If you have an i386 folder as a top-level folder on your drive and it's around 300MB or larger, then I would think that's what you want. Some factory installs copy the i386 folder to the drive.

Anyway, give it a try...
