Ques re software installer

#1 Post by pae77 » Thu Nov 10, 2005 2:01 pm

I have been using the software installer with the update packages set to being saved in C:\DRIVERS. It is working well but I have noticed that a lot of new folders (the update packages, I assume) are being created in C:DRIVERS aside from the actual driver folders like C:\DRIVERS\WIN etc.

After installing new drivers with the software installer, I tried moving these update packages to another folder and then ran the software installer again. After doing this the software installer no longer correctly listed the versions installed on my system. I moved the folders back into C:\DRIVERS and all worked well again.

I don't like the way the C:\DRIVERS folder is getting cluttered up but I want the software installer to continue to work correctly so I can live with it if necessary. Can anyone suggest a better way to set this up without screwing the software installer up?

Give this a try. Just save all the .XML files (which are located in the C:\DRIVERS\ folder and subfolders) in the C:\DRIVERS\ folder, then run Software Installer again. Let us know how it works out.

What I do (just optics, mind you) is set up two folders in C:\Drivers. PreLoad and WinXPP. I put all the initial drivers in PreLoad. I don't know why I keep these, but it is only 26Mb. I move all the latest drivers into C:\Drivers\WinXPP. This makes the main folder look clean, and doesn't hinder Software Installer at all. ... JD Hurst

That sounds like an improvement, at least cosmetically, but thinking about it some more what I am really concerned about is that these packages downloaded by the software installer just seem to keep piling up. I think my C:\Drivers folder is almost up to 400 MB already. Before I started using the software installer, I used to install the drivers manually and I would delete the downloaded package after installation. With the software installer, the downloaded packages seem to never get deleted and, if you delete them manually, it seems to mess up the software installer. I guess I have to play around with it some more to make sure of this.

I responded differently to what you were looking for. On some machines (new and not my own) I ran software installer to download things and organized them as I said. But I have not gone back and updated.

On my own machine, I still do it manually - check with Software Installer and then find the download and install it. These I can delete (and you say the same). I have never tried it your way, and will watch for that, too.

As long as you keep the INSTALL.LOG and CONNECT.LOG files the \DRIVERS folder, you can delete everything else in the \DRIVERS folder, including any sub-folders, after its been installed, without interferring with the operation of the Sofware Installer in terms of it knowing what new upgrades to offer you for download, and which versions you have already installed.

BTW, I don't currently use "Resuce and Recovery", so have not downloaded and installed it. Does anyone know if there is way to spoof the Software Installer to stop offering it to me?

Cheers,

Bill

Well this is true, but the problem I am experiencing when I remove an update package from the C:\Drivers folder and then run Software installer again is after it offers me the correct upgrades available to download, the next screen shows the correct "installed" version but shows the previous version as the "available" versions. In other words, I no longer get the arrow pointing to the left which indicates that the installed version is the same as the latest available version.
