Z series Fan noise?

#1 Post by philip » Fri Nov 11, 2005 1:05 am

Hello,

I was wondering if anybody can comment on the Z series fan noise. I have used the T42, X41 laptops and the "fan always on" option was driving me crazy. I am considering buying an Z series, but I wanted to find out more about the fan operation.

Thanks,

Philip

Personally i've never understood all the moaning about fans - IMHO they are not that noisy and even if they are on all the time, I think this is just a drawback of faster notebooks - people don't complain that desktop fans are on all the time.

Anyway - to the point. These machines have good ventilation and the thermals are designed to cope with future cpus etc on future models so on these initial Z60's the machine should keep relatively cool. When i've been using them the fan hasn't been on the whole time - I suppose this will depend on what your doing and the environment but it should be better than the existing t series.

I received a Z60t last week. It's a failry quiet machine. The fan does turn on 10-15 minutes after powering up and does not turn off (at least with A/C). I've had a few T4x's and the Z behaves in the same manner. While the fan does run constantly it doesn't suffer from the dreaded pop/buzz that the T41 series suffered from. Seems to me that whoever the moron is that programs the fan speeds for the T series has migrated over to the Z product line. ;)

So is the Z60 fan like the T42 (on all the time on the lowest level, which is barely audible), or more like the latest T series T43 (with which it shares the latest processor) with the fan on all the time but at the second level, which many people CAN hear and find annoying ?

Lenovo has continued the new tradition of loud and annoying. Good news is that the fan control app (look in the T area) works beautifully with the Z.
